Egluntyne
You need the Solihull Eglu Lesley! Please let me know what this is! Did you think it was another Eglu design, or a piece of art rather like the Angel of the North............come to think of it.........that is not a bad idea!! Lesley
....now if it was a PURPLE Eglu in Solihull - i'd be over like a shot Emma! Why is it that the only ewe we have which has horns is the one which requires milking? It is becoming a real pain - quite literally! She has rammed our hands against the side of the trailer and kicks at every opportunity We're black and blue - and I'm so scared of being immobilised again I'm worth more than a sheep!! One sheep costs the same as one physio treatment - I'm very tempted to cart Iona off to the abattoir and bottle feed little Ollie We started off using a soft rope halter and tying her to the corner of the trailer - until it loosened one day and she nearly strangled herself while we were both holding her and Carl was milking her. Now we immobilise her by lying her down and holding a foreleg back on her side - but it obviously hurts her to be milked and she kicks and struggles. After this mornings episode when she crushed Carl's hand and kicked me on the shinbone, I went to weed two more of the veggie plots - i was quite enjoying myself until Carl came back from the top of the fields with Jazz off the lead - and the demented ^&**&*&* dog ran all over the raised beds. I'm surprised that most of you didn't hear me ........and the bees have gone mad as well - very scary I think it must be the weather.............. The Dogmother
I heard you Lesley We're promised storms tonight, plus there's a very high pollen count today (I'm suffering), perhaps that's why the bees have gone mad.
Lesley
Yes, the pollen's bad here today - I went straight out at 6.30 and forgot to take my tablet and use my spray - I knew about it by 12.30 when I came back inside
Guest
What are bees like when they go mad?
Louise
Feed UHT whole milk to Ollie Lesley it is a good substitute for sheeps milk you can also water down carnation 50:50 with water So long as he got a good first feed from mum there is no need to kill yourself trying to milk a stroppy Ewe
Paola
You learn something new everyday I never knew you could milk a ewe
The Dogmother
Last time I saw that little s"Ooops, word censored!", he was a tad small, I hope he's recovering now.
Lesley
He's fine - he was only small because he was the youngest. I must look in the book to see how long they take milk for - perhaps he'll be weaned soon and we won't have to think about bottle feeding Thanks for the info Louise. Louise
6 weeks Lesley
Lesley
Oooooh! thank you Louise - he's three weeks old now There wasn't much milking to do this morning, so perhaps he's starting to wean himself onto grass, hay and concentrates She still won't let him suckle from that side - we were hoping she would but the milk is obviously still tainted. Louise
He will still need some milk till he is 6 weeks but at 3 he should start to eat solid feeds just not in enough quantities I would suggest you ask the vet for a multivit jab at about day 40 just to make sure he won't get watery mouth which is usually fatal it is related to vitamin E and can kick in at weaning in animals that have been struggling to feed from mum They can be nursed through it if you catch it and give rehydration fluids but it is very intensive therapy and can be avoided with a quick vitamin jab
Lesley
Thanks Louise - but can't I just give him a multivit tablet? He's been feeding quite well from the other side of her udder - she only has a problem on one side. She's looking quite good today - and we hardly had to milk her at all. Louise
A jab is better and you can get a drug called vitanium which has more Vit E in it If you are okay doing the jabs you may be able to buy it over the counter and do it yourself
Lesley
Well, we have been shown how - and Carl dealt with the penicillin injections - but the lambs are a bit smaller
Louise
I wish I lived closer Lesley it is so simple when you know how Mind you Ollie is young you could take him to the vet rather than call him out

TheGirlsMum
Just caught up on here and read about the carnation milk. My OH was 2 months premature back in 1960 and he was fed on Carnation milk and he's now a strapping sailor of 6 foot 1.

Lesley
After a fraught evening on Thursday which involved eating at 10pm, Jazz not having had her usual, earlier, playtime and Carl with a glass of red wine which ended up all over the furniture ( ) I decided we'd have a much more relaxing evening on Friday - dinner early, nice walk with Jazz as the weather was fine etc. ............. ... then i had a phone call at 5.45 to say that the shearer was on his way We've been waiting for three weeks for him to come but because I want to keep the fleece for spinning, it can only be done on a dry day. We finished outside at 8.15 - but we have shorn sheep Before shearing..... The mobile holding pen.... Toenails cut first.... One woolly coat off.... This lamb saw his chance for a quick feed! A wheelbarrow full of fleeces.... A chilly night ahead....
