Donna C
I read that it was good to put shredded newspaper in the nest box. Good for warmth and good for not getting mites as with straw. my girls love it as nice and soft BUT, i'm on my third shredder . It seems no matter how little i cut paper or if i put through one sheet at a time. It seems to me it would be better to do it by hand. Does anyone have any good idea's on shredders or cheap clean material for nest.
Geoid
Dont use newspaper, its too thin and will jam up your shredder, I use any old junk mail, bank statements, envelopes etc. WHSmith own brand shredders are rather good.

I use newspaper-usually the sports pages from the Telegraph and haven't had a problem. We have a Panda Fellowes shredder and have had it for ages. Just make sure you cut the pieces of paper to a smaller length before you shred them as we've had problems where it can get caught round their legs. mistysark
I found if the paper has been stored in my shed it gets stuck but if i shred just as hubby finishes the paper it fine. so dont let it get cold or damp is my advice. Just make sure he really has finished as mine wasnt to happy with me on saturday!
Geoid
Get a cross cut shredder too, it cuts the paper up into little pieces.
Chucky Mama
I use shredded paper but it isn't newspaper, just junk mail.
Tiggy
I use shredded paper from work, lettters mostly, but there is something very satisfying about shredding the tax demand for chickens to poo on
majorbloodnock
We've got a cube, and we use four broadsheet pages per cleanout; one to line each poo tray and two to line the nesting box. We then chuck all our shredded junk mail etc. in as nesting material, and the only stuff that isn't recycled is the aubiose (or similar) on top of the newspaper in the poo trays. All of it, of course, then gets recycled later on ready for the allotment.
