Lavenders_Blue
They definitely prefer rainwater. I fill my girls' drinker up from the water butt (when it has sufficient water) and they love it!
Charlie7
Really? Maybe I should give that a try.

green
Sure is You watch yours when it's rained - they love it! I meant my girls all along. They've been 'pecking the run' and as I've been watching from the kitchen window I didn't realise they were after the rain water. I was wondering what they were up to. Is your Elsie a Speckledy? One of mine is and looks much the same, from the neck up anyway. They both seem to have a pale face, is that cause they're still young or more because of their colouring, do you think? Mine's not laying yet.
chick wiggle
Aww what lovely pictures, mine prefer 'draught' off the bars too, when they cant get muddy from the puddles that is Does make you wonder why we bother cleaning their drinkers so meticulously doesnt it? I can't remember the exact type she is - though she's a hybrid, they had all these names and it escapes me - but others have also said she looks like a Speckledy. The chap at Thorne's where we got Elsie and Hilda from said that Elsie's type is the exact opposite of Dottie who's a Pepperpot Elsie does seem to have quite a pale face, though it is changing - she's getting marks on her beak and also her comb/wattles are going redder too I'm guessing it's because they're young - also Hilda and Elsie's legs/feet are still quite pale as well We've also not had eggs as yet from Hilda or Elsie, no doubt hopefully at some point in the next few weeks we'll get one. Hopefully they've been taking lessons from Dottie, who's regular as clockwork, bless her Edited October 27, 2010 by Guest

C&T
I've thought about using water from the water butt, but then didn't... Only because the water is (in effect) stagnant water, with potentially all sorts of stuff in it?? Fresh rain water is just that - but after sitting in my waterbutt for a few weeks or months, I was a bit worried about then giving it to the girls?? Even a muddy puddle is unlikely to be stagnant - will dry up/soak away in no time.

merlotti
Ahh - they look as if they're enjoying it MBB! I also wonder why I clean their glugs so regularly, losing most of the cider vinegar I put it. Maybe I'll leave it a little longer between cleans! I too thought about the stagnancy of the water butt - if it's clean to start with and used regularly though, I don't see a problem as the water will be moving every day...anyone else with other thoughts on this?
