clootie
Wally, my Brahma cockeral, has had a problem with his left eye although there are no visible signs of infection i.e. discharge, swelling etc. He is eating noromally although he is a little subdued. Yesterday he was noticably depressed, head under wing most of the day. I've been out most of today and only just home, I checked on him and both his eyes are closed now ... I even thought he had passed away as he was silent and still in his house, his ladies are all still wandering around outside which is most unlike them as they're usually in bed by now. I touched him and he stood up immediately and I could see that his right eye is closed now too. I don't know what to do. He will let me touch his head and eyes which makes me think that he isn't in any pain but I'm at a loss as to what I can do to help. Has anyone has experience of this before? He's moulting too which I know takes a lot out of them but the eye thing ......... ?? He's such a sweetie and I love him to bits and hate to think that there's something I should be doing but not. Egluntyne
Sounds as though he needs to see a vet Cloots. It could be any one of a number of things really. Have you bathed the eyes and had a look at them? He could have a foreign body in one, which would be very painful if it has caused a corneal abrasion, and would account for the miserable appearance. Lewis
Doesn't sound right You could make a cup of tea (no milk or sugar ) and bathe his eye in cold tea ... Hope he's ok
clootie
Thanks for the replies. I'm going to spend some time with him tomorrow and see if I can manage to get his eyes open. Thanks for the tip Lewis re the cold tea. Hope he likes Yorkshire Tea!

Redwing
eyedrops containing Chloramphenicol are useful - the ones I have are Boots Antibiotic Eyedrops, I always some in my fridge and they work a treat on chook eye problems they are not licenced for use on poultry in the UK and you have to invent a husband/child/granny with a gammy eye to get your hands on them but its worth it! Valkyrie
How's he doing Cloots?
clootie
He seems much better! The eye drops Tasha recommended are working and he's scoffing mealworms and grapes but he's still rather quiet and a little droopy - he's not crowing at all which is unusual. I'll see how he is today and maybe let him out with the others to get on to some grass. Thanks for asking missus x
Valkyrie
Glad to hear he's a bit perkier. Try some of those nutri-drops - it might be the kick start he needs. One of these days I shall be over to nick him you know!
