Chicken shack
I am able to let my girls FR most days as OH works down the garden however when I came home today they were a bit wet. Is it ok to let them FR in the rain surely they would go in the run for shelter if they weren't happy I have noticed on some threads that some Omleteers keep their girls in when its wet. When I came in from work I was soaking wet but OH lets me out even when I don't want to.
Egluntyne
Mine often free range in the rain. As you say, they will seek shelter when they have had enough.
MarkBevBen
I was soaking wet but OH lets me out even when I don't want to. CS! From what I've seen our girls really don't seem to mind the rain. When I used to let them FR in the garden one time it was pouring it down and they were running around, flapping their wings all bedraggled and windswept, but thoroughly enjoying themselves Mind you, when we did have a particularly heavy downpour the other day, I noticed Dottie and Hilda reitre to their Eglu for a siesta! Chortle Chook
Today I noticed that my Silkies were getting rather bedraggled. Their head gear in particular looked rather sad but what really concerned me was that they might go to bed wet. I tried to dry them with a towel but unlike fur their feathers didn't seem to let the towel soak up any water and I didn't want to rub too hard. I then tried with the hair drier, keeping the hair drier moving and quite far from them. They didn't seem to mind, but I can't say it was very effective. Will they catch colds / flue if I let them go to bed wet? Should I keep them in on rainy days?
percy049
They might get a cold if they go to bed wet. ours used to stay outside in the rain, and get soaking wet, so we used to shut them up early. now, they just run to their shelter or under the trees when it rains! Chucky1
When we were newer to chicken keeping than now, on rainy days Mrs Chucky and I used to grab handfuls of towels and go and dry the girls. I'm sure they thought that we were completely mental Thankfully they didn't let on to anyone else. Ours FR in the rain, snow, wind, ... if they don't like it they go inside. If its really unpleasant we give them corn at bedtime.
migsy
My hybrids don't take any notice of the rain and FR in all weathers. The 2 purebreeds find themselve to be a little more delicate and like to stay mainly under cover in the rain. I let them choose!
