Present-phobic family - ideas please!

Recommended Posts

I always buy my own. :lol: That way I get what I want, and not an iron, or a step ladder, like my friend once did. Her husband was lucky not to have his Christmas dInner via a naso-gastric tube that year. At least he'd had it gift wrapped.

:lol::lol::lol:

I don't mind presents like that as long as I have actually asked for them, and even then, I'd rather buy them myself, as my OH would only get the wrong model. :? Picky, moi?

I should add that hubby surpassed himself last year. He actually took note in his head of a handbag that I'd said I'd liked, went and bought it. When I opened it on Christmas Day he had also bought me a Pandora bracelet with some charms and they were wrapped up in the handbag. I think he must have worried about having me moaning at him again. :D

Lists

Much safer, and still gives the "giver" an element of choice, but you are more likely to end up with what you will like.

I have a BIL and SIL who are (ahemm) a tad flush, and like to splash (I've always though spending £2k or more per child at Christmas a tad excessive... Maybe that is just me!). Last year they gave me and OH so much stuff it was embarrassing, and half of it was not to our taste, or just plain weird. Most of it went to charity shops. Shame, but there is no telling them. This year will be no better I am sure! :doh:

At least the local Hospice benefits!

A timely thread this as I have recently been having a bit of a moan to OH that my birthday presents (last month) were mainly things that we needed as a family and not something personal just for me. I mean, we did need a second chicken-feeder but I felt that it was really the girls who benefited and not me! I have read this thread out to him and am hoping Xmas may be better.

Past present highlights have been: a noticeboard, a saucepan, a pair of wellies and a barbecue.

I don't mind getting that kind of stuff from his parents (rather than some useless ornament) but like ANH says it would be nice if he (and DS) could spend a nanosecond thinking about what I would really like. Or maybe a bit more than a nanosecond because although he knows I love reading, instead of looking at my wish list on Amazon he has in the past got me books I have already got on my shelves :roll: so I guess that means he did spend about a nanosecond thinking about what I would like.

I'm beginning to think I'm very lucky :D

We ask each other what we'd like around now. If one of us has an idea then that sets the limit for spending but if both of us has no idea then we set a limit (which is usually low; around £15-£20) and have to buy for each other within that. I love it, because we don't 'need' much and its fun. I usually receive something pretty (Victoriany wollen gloves, jewellery, egg cosy, fave soaps) or cheap but huge quantities (eg sweeties) or expensive and small quantities (like £15 of saffron) or thoughtful (like a book). Best of all, my OH sometimes makes me some art which involves something like collage or blowing up a favourite photo onto a canvas frame.

However, if he wasn't the thoughtful type (and I admit I did have to lay the law down about wrapping the present, not handing it over in its plastic bag and there was a blip when I got a pretty teatowel) then I think I'd do some surfing and give him a list of websites and online delivery options. I know I'd be miserable if I got nothing or something horribly practical so I'd have to take some control...even though I agree, you really shouldn't have to. Or ask your OH to take you out for special tea/dinner/weekend/exciting experience? Or: my Mum has learnt that her taste in clothes for me and my taste don't tally at all at all ever, so now she wafts a brochure at me and I choose something, which works very well.

My hubby is definitely better with lists. He has tried in the past, but once he gets an idea in his head, he tends to stick with it. I once mentioned that I liked the Border Fine Arts animal sculptures, so for christmas I got the model of a wolf mother with cubs. The year after I got the otter mother with cubs. I could see a theme developing so had to nip that one in the bud! More recently he knew I wanted to replace my old cassettes with CDs, so he bought me the Eagles Greatest Hits. The year after he bought me ............. the Very Best of the Eagles. :silenced:
