Why the Isle of Wight?

Recommended Posts

According to the BBC news site

The latest figures for teenage pregnancy on the Isle of Wight show a year-on-year increase - after a gradual decrease in the preceding years - with 96 girls under the age of 18 becoming pregnant in 2008.

Not sure how other areas compare to the IOW  Maybe it's just much higher than other areas. It is quite a small, contained area, so maybe they can see more clearly if it has an effect on the population, than if was done on the mainland.

Maybe they should also concentrate on responsible relationships for the young men of the area!

There should be a lot more " joined up thinking" like, encouraging both the young men and women into responsible relationship behaviour, raising aspiration, so that the don't think that all there is in life is babies.....for both the young men and women, encouraging alternatives to full-on intercourse( i fully accept being modded here, as I understand that young people read this Forum) . However, burying our heads in the sand, and preaching abstinence like the person I heard on the Radio this morning, well...that's not going to work....

My OH used to manage a YMCA hostel, and the amount of young men who had deliberately become fathers aged 16-18 was huge, all because they had never had a father, and wanted to feel like a man, by becoming one. This needs challenging..and in the current financail climate..won' be t!!

I think the IOW has a disproportionately higher amount of teen pregnancies, like Great Yarmouth..which used to be the UK ( excluding London) teen pregnancy capital......the things you learn when your OH manages Young People's Services....

Agreed, Sari. Irresponsible male behaviour is precisely 50% of the problem, not 100%

When I went there a lot of it is very run down. Perhaps not much else to do apart from play doctors and nurses. :?

You've obviously not seen my GP...we have bets on how many " snorts" he does per appointment.( suffering from catarrh always..) ...and if it's a wig or not....he has jet black hair..known in our house as a Raven's WIng...plus silver tash and sideburnss.....suspicious!!
