I have a confession to make - I am a woman and I hate clothes shopping

I dislike the bewildering choice of clothes available, I dislike struggling in and out of multiple outfits in a pokey changing room, I end up despondent that nothing seems to suit me and I get frustrated that having finally found something I like, I get it home and find it doesn't match anything else in my wardrobe

As a result I don't buy clothes very often and wear what I do have to destruction.

 

Well, at last I have found a solution to my problem - the John Lewis personal shopper service. I tried it for the first time yesterday and I can't recommend it highly enough. Firstly (and most importantly IMO) it doesn't cost anything, which is awesome. You a taken to a spacious private changing room where the fashion adviser discusses what you like and dislike, what you are looking to buy, then looks at your figure and assesses what shapes and styles suit you. She then tells you you're in the wrong size bra gets one that fits which magically seems to make you lose a dress size then she leaves you in the comfort of the changing room whilst she gallops round the shop picking outfits for you to try.

 

I was so impressed, she didn't pick one thing that didn't fit me perfectly. A couple of things didn't suit me or I didn't like but most did. She helped me choose bits that would go together that I could mix and match which was so helpful. The hardest bit was choosing what to buy as I could easily have brought it all home

 

A highly recommended service to anyone else who hates shopping. I will definitely be using this again in the future.

Ive been to a Marks and Spencer personal shopper she did it slightly differently, she asked for hair colour, skin tone, eye colour, height, shape and size before I got there, when I got there she had this rail of clothes ready for me to try on she showed me stuff and asked what I personally would never wear and then told me why I should seriously consider it

I spent a fortune but everything was wonderful. she even told me the knickers I was wearing were the wrong shape for me and I needed different ones

That sounds ideal, I've often fancied trying one. I think you need someone who is objective to tell you what does and doesn't suit. I might try it next time I need an outfit for a do.

It really is fun Hubby once won a "gold" red letter day & we spent it on a personal shopper in Kendals in Manchester, & had £1000 to spend too

I'm a dreadful shopper so I stick to the charity shops, that way the mistakes are cheaper

 

Mind you, after many many years, I've finally worked out what I can and can't wear so just stick to classic stuff

Pleased you had a successful trip and the personal shopping experience was worth it I think I would feel slightly odd having someone focus all their attention on me, not sure if I would feel a bit "looked at" or self-conscious I'm a terrible shopper mind you so perhaps I ought to give it a go!

I must admit, I didn't know what to expect and I wondered if the personal shopper would take one look at me and go "my goodness, what a style disaster, where do I start?!". But she was simply lovely, very helpful, totally objective and there was no pressure to buy anything. It didn't feel at all weird.

Cathy - don't tell me they do this in M&S, I already maxxed out my credit card!

I've used this service in Debenhams - the advantage is they have a range of different franchises there, so you get a wide choice of prices/quality, from Jasper Conran to Wallis to Dorothy Perkins, if you see what I mean. I do agree though, it is fabulous - everything fits, even if it is stuff you wouldn't choose, and if you need another size or a belt or a scarf or something, they go and get it. It has persuaded me into wearing some slightly different styles that I probably wouldn't have tried otherwise, and it takes all the hassle out of shopping. I go about twice a year and have a big spend, and then hardly buy anything the rest of the year, as I also loathe clothes shopping.

I have used the Debenhams service too. I had an interview and was at the point of tears when one of their assistants asked if I was OK and did I need any help. It works out well for both parties. I too spent far too much and bought several outfits but I went to my interview feeling good.
