Willow
Anyway, finances aside, the idea of a monarchy doesn't sit right with me, all the bowing and s"Ooops, word censored!"ing and tugging of forelocks etc I'm completely with you on this Poet ! Clash City Rocker
meanwhile, I'm feeling for Kate's dad, who is apparently footing part of the bill!!! omg, the poor man - here he was trundling along, got a few quid in the bank for the daughter's wedding - and suddenly he is landed with the wedding of the millenium!! you've got to sell a few party plates and streamers to be able to do that... Maybe he could ask the Groom's family to pay a bit towards the wedding. Get them to sell a "couple of crowns" to pay for the evening do !!!!! Clash City Rocker
April 29 th.......nice...a Friday Too....Day off.It is May Day on the Monday so it is a long weekend off. Not so great if you're an Employer. 4 days off in a Two week period (with Easter the weekend before). 4 days with no income in quick sucession, 4 days holidays to pay for ,and at "month end" which I find the busiest time off the month (wages/BACs etc). Are schools still on holiday following the Easter break or have they returned?
Old Speckled Hen
I'm feeling for Kate's dad, who is apparently footing part of the bill!!! omg, the poor man - Oh I really feel for him, No advantages being the future Queen's father then. Must be such a burden having to fork out. But then maybe one shouldn't believe all the media says. I should think Queenie will pay and we will pay for the security. All in all,an expensive day off work.

Guest
No advantages being the future Queen's father then. ... she won't be the queen will she? the current queen's husband is a prince and the queen mother was never 'queen' even though she was married to the king. You only get that title if YOU are the heir to the throne don't you?

You only get that title if YOU are the heir to the throne don't you? I disagree. Queen Mary was King George V wife And the Queen mother was known as Queen Elizabeth. There has been much talk lately of Queen Camilla now that the forelock tugging proletariat seem to have accepted her as Charles' partner. A reigning Queen cannot have a King as a consort as then he would outrank her. So he becomes a Prince However my point was that the Middletons will gain muchly from their newly enhanced social status

Thanks for putting me straight.

patsylabrador
Well I still think it's happy news. I loved her smart blue dress, the ring & the sentiment behind it and think April is a lovely month for a wedding.
Guest
we never studied 'the monarchy' at school. I wish we had to be honest as, despite not agreeing with the system, it is interesting. I found the BBC drama 'The Lost Prince' incredibly absorbing http://www.bbc.co.uk/drama/lostprince/ I forgot about 'queen' Mary!
Cinnamon
Well I still think it's happy news. I loved her smart blue dress, the ring & the sentiment behind it and think April is a lovely month for a wedding. She did look really good in that frock - it brought out her shiny hair & really flattered her figure. I bet (& hope) she goes for something more modern & fitted for her wedding dress I didn't realise that she is local to me.......
Willow
I thought she looked lovely in that blue dress as well. It will be interesting to see if it dates as much as the outfit Diana wore for her engagement.
AJuff
Are schools still on holiday following the Easter break or have they returned? Yes we were on holiday anyway . . hardly an extra day off!!!! I'll still watch it though!!!
debbier
A reigning Queen cannot have a King as a consort as then he would outrank her. So he becomes a Prince My understanding is that this is not quite the whole story. Prince Philip became a prince before they married. The husband of a reigning Queen has no actual title simply by becoming married to the monarch. All totally bewildering and not really logical, but then the monarchy isn't, is it? Egluntyne
Prince Philip was already a prince of the Greek and Danish Royal famiies before he married the Queen. His mother was the sister of Louis Mountbatten, and a great granddaughter of Queen Victoria. His father was Prince Andrew of Greece. He didn't become a 'Royal Highness' until his marriage to HMQ. Lesley
The date of the wedding has certainly caused problems for the Shakespeare Birthday celebrations - they weren't able to hold them on the weekend of the 23rd because it clashes with Easter and the previous weekend is Palm Sunday so they'd planned for the weekend of the 30th/31st. I would have thought it could just be one big party but perhaps all the dignitaries who usually attend will be in London instead.
