Prince William

Recommended Posts

Kate is pictured on the front of the Telegraph today - NOT wearing the ring! I would be terrified of wearing - and maybe losing - something that expensive... I suppose it's gone back into a royal safe somewhere, which seems a bit of a shame for your engagement ring. maybe he should have got her another one as well, like her 'everyday' engagement ring so she could flash it about a bit?!

Not exactly practical a ring is it

Have to say I wouldn't have wanted that ring. I'm not superstitious but its another element of Diana hanging over them. shes already being asled whats its like to follow in Dianas footsteps and you can tell shes itching to say 'I'm my own person, treat me onmy merits' but she was too worried about offendidng. Luckily Will practically said it for her

the media are making her out to be a bit of a stalker/prince chaser. They showed footage of her in a school play saying how she was going to marry a prince, then that she went on the same art history course as william and the same working holiday etc. It reminded me of that film, 3 coins in a fountain, where the girl pretended to have all the same tastes and interests as the prince so she could 'bag him'.

There was also footage of him striding off and her trotting along behind trying to keep up with him and of him being asked about getting married and he poo pooed the idea.

They also broke up at one point because he said all the fun had gone out of their relationship.

Now, I'm no relationship expert or psychologist but it doesn't seem like the romance of the century to me.

Anyway, I'm not into the monarchy so, as long as there isn't a drain on the state purse, they can do what they like as far as I'm concerned.

No doubt the media will hype it to death and that annoys me more

We did that as well! The number of people who asked us "are you getting engaged" or "aren't you engaged yet" before we actually got engaged was silly (and we aren't in the public eye, or heirs to the throne!) - so we told them we had no plans etc etc. Which was quite true!

They slowly stopped asking, and that is when OH did the asking!!!

Mind you, then they just started with the "Are you having Children" or "Aren't your pregnant yet" - pretty much what the press are already doing to Wililam and Kate...

Personally I think the ring should have been broken down & made into a Tiara or necklace of something,& gifted to Kate that way.

I must admit this thought did go through my mind too, it would have been a nicer idea in my opinion, something to remember Diana by but then able to have a ring that she really wanted.

I wish them all the best. He has had such a terrible time with the loss of his Mother, good luck to him and Kate!

I believe it isn't going to be a state wedding. :? So no day off and we won't be paying for it (well I am sure we will in a roundabout way).

I think we should pay for it. Afterall his grandmother is on every note!

Not pro or anti royal, but they bring millions into the country every year.

....Not pro or anti royal, but they bring millions into the country every year.

I keep seeing people say this, it's totally unquantifiable and we'd still get tourists/tourism without a royal family. Other cities and countries do.

...and they cost us millions. Someone said to me that we only pay 63p per head to pay for the royal family (not a figure I've checked) but, and this is ignoring all the hidden costs of security and policing etc, then that's over 4 million quid.

I just think that by now, with all their businesses and investments, they should be self funded by now surely!?

Anyway, finances aside, the idea of a monarchy doesn't sit right with me, all the bowing and s"Ooops, word censored!"ing and tugging of forelocks etc

I doubt a president would cost us any less. Indeed, it is likely that the Royal Family quite substantially subsidise the cost of their official state duties out of their own assets and income - something a President wouldn't be able to do. Yes, the taxpayer helps fund the security, but remember we'd not only have to provide security for a current President, but for all past Presidents too, as they would all be at risk, and are entitled to protection as is any private citizen deemed to be under threat (whether they get it, of course, is another matter...). The alternative may cost more than the current arrangement, if that is your only criterion.

I actually think they do a fantastic job - there is a huge amount that goes on behind the scenes that we don't know about, supporting charities, community groups and so on. I have met the Queen and she is an absolutely lovely lady. She is extremely kind, has done her research, and makes you feel quite at ease in her presence. Contrary to the way she is portrayed, she has an excellent empathy and way with people, something difficult to achieve considering the protected life she has led. I cannot honestly say that I envy her either her position, or her job. Whatever she does is going to be scrutinised and criticized - I can't say I'd want to live my life like that, and she didn't choose her position, nor can she do much about it, since abdicating would not absolve her of such scrutiny or attention.

I realise there are so many people so against the Monarchy, but I look at other countries and see the potential alternative with great trepidation.

Of course, many on here might disagree ;)

did I hear that the Queen now pays tax? I didnt realise that she didnt pay in the first place  And Im sure it was reported yesterday that Mom & Dad are going to pay for the wedding and so they should. However, I do see why the state has to provide security, we live in very dangerous times for such high profile people.

I dont have strong feelings for the monarchy but just looking at the presidents in other countries makes me realise that we are very lucky not to live in a country with that system

if we don't have a monarchy do we have to have a president? why can't we just have a govt and a PM?

Virtually all democracies have a separation between government and state: otherwise you risk having an autocracy and ultimately a dictatorship. I can't think of many countries where there is no such separation although the amount of political power the president has varies from country to country. The US is the only major democracy where the nominal head of Government is also Head of State, but even there, there is some separation of the functions of President, Senate and Congress, and there is also the protection that the federal system brings.

I'll take the extra bank holiday very happily too. and my birthday is may 3, so that makes an extra long w/e just before (I'll be 50 next year, sob).

meanwhile, I'm feeling for Kate's dad, who is apparently footing part of the bill!!! omg, the poor man - here he was trundling along, got a few quid in the bank for the daughter's wedding - and suddenly he is landed with the wedding of the millenium!! you've got to sell a few party plates and streamers to be able to do that... :D
