Cinnamon
I have never used a sewing machine & want a nice little one to tinker with (I want to cheekily copy something I have seen on eBay!) Also the daughter likes to make & re vamp clothes,so it would be handy for her too I was most taken with the John Lewis mini one I saw today which is only £50 AND COMES IN HOT PINK Even less with my discount I want something nice & small, simple to use & reliable. Does anyone have one of these, please?
bluekarin
I don't but I think I know the one you mean - there were a load in my Waitrose when I was in the other day in all lovely jewel colours I would just say be wary of anything too light as you won't be able to sew anything too think i.e jeans or too many layers of fabric. Cinnamon
It would be for cottons only, for the moment. Looking on eBay,they have a really good re sell value too,so if I do decide I want something a bit more robust,I reckon I could sell it on without too many problems

jackie45
Needing a dress for a wedding in the summer I went back to dress making after 20+years. My old machine broke down so I got a £50 one from John Lewis. It was dead easy to use and using a simple pattern the dress came out alright. The only problem I can see is the weight and thickness of material. So I cannot make heavy winter clothes but at this price its well worth it. sari
No...but my littlest has seen the beautifully coloured advert in her Momma's Good Housekeeping magazine, and has asked Momma for one for Christmas......she is constantly cutting and snipping....she's 9. I am thinking about something a little slower..worried wbout her fingers!

Mrs Webmuppet
Sari, Little Miss Webmuppet (aged 10) has been using a Jenome mini sewing machine for a good while without any trouble. I did check that it was fairly finger proof (while the machine was unplugged I tried to stick my finger under the needle and even a small finger wouldn't fit). She isn't allowed to remove the bobbin or reload the bobbin and an adult has to make sure she has threaded the machine properly ( I didn't want her breaking the machine through not doing something properly) but apart from that, she is quite happy using it. Thanks...I'll check that out..the name rings a bell, I may have seen one on Ebay....I don't begrudge Topsy the JL one, but just worry that it's a lot of money....I'll go googling!! ubereglu
I'd say go for it!
craftyhunnypie
I had my Singer at 10 years old & still have the same one today at 36 years young! I like the look of the John Lewis ones - just for the colours & portability. Caravan sewing / travel sewing would be really cool! Sewing machines open up a whole new world of creativity for youngsters ( & not just girls these days). Emma.x
