Luvachicken
Last year in all the snow and cold, I left the poo trays as they were and just cleaned them every other day. Since the summer though, I have put newspaper in the trays and it is much quicker to wash everything after gathering the paper up - but now it's getting cold again, and snow might come , whats the best to use ? I'm sure I read that newspaper keeps everything colder and I wouldn't want that to happen. I do have Aubiose but if I poo pick that how often do I actually need to clean the tray thoroughly ? The Dogmother
I put just Aubiose and a wee bit of Biodri in the poo trays - it keeps it all dry and easy to compost. Newspaper will wick dampness in towards it, so it'll get wetter in the housing and more inclined to be a breeding ground for bacteria
Luvachicken
Yeah, thanks for that - I won't use the newspaper now, I need to clean them tomorrow so will put the aubiose in instead. How deep should it be ?
Olly
I just put a handful of Aubiose in - not even deep enough to cover it completely, but it stops it sticking too much. I definitely wouldn't use newspaper, it tends to soak up moisture and smell 'orrible!
Space Chick
I use aubiose too, just a thin layer
green
I hadn't thought of that. It's my first winter with the chooks. I'll get rid of the newspaper. Thanks.
daxigirl
I'm using eucalyptus flavoured Bliss at the moment so the girlies get that in the nest box and poop tray along with a sprinkle of Biodry. Smells quite nice, not strong like a cold remedy. I poop pick every day as the black legs like to sleep in the nest box and the yellow legs are still quite prolific pooers into the trays.
