Donna C
My girls never really like going out of their run. They tend to go nuts for few minutes then go back in However as the weather is sp cold I'm tending not to let them out as much.(got two in a go/run) I'm worried about them getting wet and then freezing because of it. Can they go out in wet?or am i best to keep them in. They are about 23 weeks. Just want to keep them happy/healthy
Stella14
They will be fine. Creatures with fur or feather are very good at growing what they need and insulating themselves.
Valkyrie
I have 2 fat orpies. Yep, they get soaked from time to time but they are now 2 and a half years old. They don't like snow though - will go out up the garden and whinge to be carried back to the run.
Donna C
Mine just havn't read the book, they are s'pose to like to free-range. Mine prefer to be in the run. Do you think they'll be o.k in the run. I's a normal one for the go.I have put a low perch in for them, plus chopped straw and they get regular green and corn of a night?? Stella14
My hens (one of which is an Orpington) are staying in their run today with an 'arms folded', huffy look about them. It's snowing and they clearly feel like I do about it. All together girls bah humbug, grumble grumble . . .
Donna C
I can't wait to see what my girls make of the snow, they HATE the rain and are not liking this cold snap. My ex-batts were never bothered with any weather, rain, snow , sun. they just loved to be out and with us( bless them )
Daphne
Donna C - I know you have posted about this before but you really don't need to worry. Orpingtons have more feather than virtually any other bird. They do dry off successfully even if soaked. They are known as a docile bird which bears confinement well - ie they do not have to FR. However, if they don't venture out much then do keep treats to a minimum or even cut them out so they don't get fat. But never fear, you are not alone with your scaredy birds - mine FR most of the time, but they also shelter regularly from the rain and hate the snow, not venturing out unless a path is cleared to the food; which knowing how greedy orps are is a miracle
Donna C
Thankyou so much, I'm sure i read they need to fr, Just want to make sure i have happy healthy girls. Thanks again
LJ's Chooks
Our orps dont go out much in the rain either.... unless of course a magpie comes anywhere near their territory and then they are far from docile!!!! what is it with magpies and chickens!!!!
