cocktails

Recommended Posts

We bought a cocktail book a few weeks ago in the charity shop and last Friday we had a fun time mixing up a few with the booze in our cupboard from last Christmas. We were pretty squiffy by the time we went to bed leaving every bottle of alcohol out on the side in the kitchen, when the children came down the next morning (after us I should say) they were very

Perhaps you could share some of our favourite recipes with us with the festive season upon us. :D

Black or white Russian.

Black has coke, white has lemonade or 7up or Sprite.

Basic alcohol mix is equal part of Tia Maria to Vodka. Dilute with either fizzy to taste. Er, I tend not to dilute it too much! My bad!

Favourite non alcoholic one is St Clements which is basically orange juice and bitter lemon. Really refreshing, great any time of year, but lovely in the summer.

I quite like a whisky mac which isn't really a cocktail, more a treat in the cold weather. Its just a measure of whisky (I wouldn't waste your malt!) topped up with ginger wine over ice. When I was younger I used to like a brandy alexander which is brandy and single cream over ice (not sure of the proportions) but now I like something much cleaner tasting like a gin sling which is: take a tall glass, put ice (ideally crushed) in the bottom third, add 1 measure gin, juice of 1/2 lemon (or a lime), splash of angostura bitters, and fill up with soda. Taste. If its too sour then ideally you have some sugar syrup ready ( ) or failing that I put some icing sugar in! Sip slowly - its quite strong!

Just remembered one of my favourites is Strawberry Daiquiri:

2 parts white rum

1 part fresh lime juice

2 dashes fraise liqueur

3 fresh strawberries

2 scoops crushed ice

Blend the lot together and pour into a goblet. Rare treat for me - only on holiday if we ever go abroad again.

Then Alexander:

1 part brandy

1 part creme de cacao

1 part cream.

Shake and . . . yummmmmmmmm

Whisk(e)y and cream is lovely!

Don't forget the Irish coffee types - Caribbean coffee (rum), Russian coffee (vodka) etc

Anyone tried a Zombie?

I was just going to post that I love daiquairies (sp??) and long island iced tea as well and have just realised its Friday night....oh to live somewhere with a cocktail bar. I could ditch my chicken coat, wellies and motheaten trews which wouldn't be seen on a dead scarecrow, put on some heels and swan about for a bit pretending to be elegant, sophisticated and urbane. Fantasies, fantasies :D

Anything with fresh strawberries! Someone made a drink with crushed strawberries, pushed through a sieve and topped up with sparkling wine on telly not long ago (Jamie Oliver perhaps?), now that would be my idea of heaven. :D Wouldn't say no to a strawberry margarita either!
