Kermit
I posted here earlier today, but it got bounced... What are peoples views on keeping entrances clear in this weather?
v8landy
If they wanted to be out they would get through that!. But I think given you took the time to take a pic, a quick clean of the snow after the photo would not have been wasted effort.
Guest
Seeing the 'skirt' underneath makes me think it has an OMF. So left alone will make no odds in the circumstances. No nasty light reflections into the hive, so no bees wanting to come out and then perishing. Regards, RAB
Daphne
I'm a bit ashamed to say I've never noticed this on my hives - so I'm not sure if I have snowy landing boards or not, but if I do, then I've never done anything about it and my bees were fine through heavy snow in the Spring (and on OMF). I will check them tomorrow morning as the hives are under 6" like yours.
Daphne
hmm - well I do have snowy boards and surrounding areas on 2 hives, each with a sprinkle of dead bees in the snow (like 6 bees each) so there is space for them to get out. The 3rd hive has no snow near the entrance and no dead bees.
Kermit
They now have huge white afro's - well over a foot deep. Yes, they have OMFs so I'm not worried about ventilation. I did clear them off as I was passing, but they have covered over again.
Guest
I did clear them off as I was passing, but they have covered over again This was 'off the roofs'? If so, don't do it! The snow is a good insulant, so the temperature adjacent to the roof is likely a lot warmer than the night temperatures we have been experiencing lately. Old Speckled Hen
Mine don't have landing boards so there is no snow build up. I may fashion some for next year as it seems to me that a layer of snow is an excellent method of stopping them flying. Meanwhile they are snowboarded. -12˚ forecast for tonight so I have popped the floors in.
