Nobby65
My cochin had all her feet fethers in sleves (shes about 22 weeks old) today all the sleves have gone and here feet are bleeding. is it normal for feather footed chooks to pull these covers off. my wifes off to buy some purple spary as the other 5 chooks have been pecking her feet, they are quite a mess. I have put her in a cat basket and brought her out of the way till i can spray her feet. Any advice would be greatfully recived
Redwing
The feathers will be encased when they first emerge (as a youngster she will just be getting her adult feathering now) the cases will flake off leaving the new feather - all perfectly normal but the feather shaft on a new feather is filled with blood and the other hens will have been attracted to this and will have pecked at them, once they see blood they will keep pecking I'd give her feet a wash and a dry and then apply the purple spray, if the scales on the feet are wounded then keep her in for the wounds to heal, if not and its just the feathers that are a mess the wash and the purple spray should sort that out and once she is all dry in the morning I'd put her back with them Do not put her back with them if there are signs of wounds or blood though, keep her in till she is fully recovered
