tahrag
Hello Everyone. We have four boy Indian Runners. We bought them as ducklings and were told three were probably girls. This has not proved to be the case! They are now five months old. What should I best be feeding them? They have been on growers pellets till now. Are "layers" pellets purely for females? Do they need additional grit? O wheat? Will they get hormonal in the spring, even without the presence of females? (Getting an additional 4+ females is not an option, not enough space). And any advice on coping with the snow (currently about 8 ins) would be appreciated. They don't like to get cold and would really prefer to spend all day - and night - in their shed instead of their outside run (which does have a shelter for them if they decided to use it). Thanks in anticipation of your help.
miller30
Hi my indian runners dont like the snow they will be fine staying in their house if its big enough put the food and water in it just in the day and take away at night otherwise leave it in their run and they will have to come out when they are hungry my drakes just eat layer pellets the same as the girls you can move them over to layers now at 5 months i also give mine cut maise or corn now its cold and they should be fine as long as you dont introduce any females as thats when the fighting will start i suppose the good thing about having all boys is they are quiet hope this helps a bit leanne. tahrag
thanks Leanne for your advice. I have been tempted to put food and water in shed with ducks during the day, but have hesitated to do so as most water in whatever container it's in ends up all over the floor and they'd very quickly end up with a very soggy shed! Weather permitting this weekend we'll cut a duck shaped exit from shed to run so they can come and go as they please (at the moment they have no direct access and have to be escorted (or chased!) out of the shed and into the run. We have spent hours and hours and hours perfecting house/run/pond for ducks - it's still a work in progress! But they're worth it! AdamD
Hi We got two unsexed indian runners last easter hoping we'd have a male and female, however they both turned out to be boys. Unfortunately in the Spring they were very aggressive and 'frustrated' and tried to mate with me all the time (probably because they had imprinted slightly - we had them from 5 days old) so we decided to get 4 females which we got this easter. We're hoping it'll calm the boys down. Hopefully this won't be the case with yours, I think it just depends on the individual bird. If you notice any fighting then that's the time to think about what you're going to do.
