Chicken out of sorts

Recommended Posts

Can anyone offer any advice.

One of my light sussex - 2 1/2 yrs is not herself. Mainly her comb and wattle have gone from being a nice red to a pale pink.

-She's always been happy to snuggle into the next box during the colder months at night, but happy to be out in the day. Thats the same.

-She has been growing a few new feathers - not had a moult, but over the last month or two we've noticed a few lost feathers around the place. Not what I'd expect from a moult.

-She seems to be eating ok - layers pellets as staples and some greens/boiled veg / corn / bread as a supplement most days.

-No signs of mites

-Clean bum

-No sniffles or runny nose/eyes

We've put her in the shed with an infra red lamp on to see if that perks her up.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thank you.

She may have had a mini moult, a couple of mine just lost feathers on their neck and back. Being a pure breed she'll have a rest over winter and her comb will go paler when she's not laying. My Light Sussex stopped laying when she moulted back in sept/oct and I'm not expecting her to start again until spring. Her comb has shrunk and is pink rather than red.

If there's no sign of parasites and she has been wormed I would say it's all quite normal.

I would agree, most of mine have had a moult, they have pale combs and wattles and have stopped laying. I have been feeding them layers pellets and mixed corn which I have added cod liver oil to, which will give them a boost. I did have one girl who was a little under the weather (sneezing a bit) so she had a dose of nutri drops and she seems ok now. It is hard to tell whether it is the weather or the moult, keep a check on body weight that can tell you if something is amiss.
