brako101
How many eggs a year would you say you get from a Ginger nut ranger and pepperpot respectively? Thanks Edited December 18, 2010 by Guest
Patricia W
Lots. When they start of course, and that may not be for a while if you've just got them, but then again some people have eggs after a day or two. That's what makes it so exciting - the uncertainty! Carol U
For their first year of laying you should get an egg from each most days. After that it tends to get a little less each year. As they are very similar hybrids (both from R.I.R. stock), their laying will probably be much the same.
sjp
I'd say around the 280 mark give or take the Gingernut Ranger is I think simular to a warren or columbian Black tail the Miss Pepperpot I think simular to a Black Star both are listed to lay in the 300+ mark but that could be in commerical set ups
Plum
First year Grackle (Miss Pepperpot) laid about 350!!! last year most days maybe about 20 days missed over the year. Pigeon (Gingernut ranger) laid most days for several months and since then lays all sorts of mishapen and soft eggs when she can be bothered which Grackle eats
Purplemaniacs
I had one of each and they both laid an egg most days, sadly our Gingernut did not live to a great age but was the friendliest chook we have had so far. Chrissie
docsquid
The two Gingernuts laid an egg pretty much every day for the first year: Gwennie maybe had 2 or 3 days off in all that time, Megan about a day off per week. Blodwyn, the Pepperpot, lays about 5 days then has one off. Gwennie went off lay in October this year, and her eggs are now softies or rather thin-shelled eggs. Sometimes they break, sometimes they don't. She hasn't come back to lay properly, despite lots of supplementation (cod liver oil, extra protein, limestone flour, regularl worming etc etc) and tender care. I don't mind - she's a sweet little chicken. Neither Megan (Gingernut) or Blodwyn (Pepperpot) have stopped laying despite moulting (both have lost their knickers at the moment) - still laying good, strong, large eggs. I'm lucky I also have a Pekin bantam laying (Dilys - one egg every other day) and also one of the other banties, although I don't know which one, has come into lay (one or two eggs a week). sewitall
Apart from a short spell when my ginger nut was Ill and went off lay for a couple of weeks I would say that they have averaged out at about 6 eggs each for my ginger nut and pepper pot per week over the last six months. But by far my best layer is my white star who lays bigger eggs than the others despite being a slimmer build and rarely misses a day. But in common with most white stars she is very skittish, hyper and will probably burn herself out quicker than the others. My pepper pot is very laid back and my ginger nut is the adventurer and the most friendly. But I do find that the weather has a role to play too. When it is extremely hot the eggs are smaller and more days are missed. Best month was October when I had a 99 per cent laying rate. December so far is 88 per cent.
