Rusky
Hi, I noticed that one of my hens is missing feathers & has a red patch around the fluff any ideas?? Edited December 21, 2010 by Guest
Wolfie
Just a guess - is she being "feather pecked" by another hen? We have a rescue hen (white utility leghorn) we cannot put in with the others as she pulls the others' "knickers" out. It's a vice she acquired with her previous owners - their run was tiny and she was bored stiff, so she did this. All the other hens in the run had no underneath feathers left. I might be wrong - someone more knowledgeable will answer you!
Rusky
It might be feather plucking from boredom, there are 3 hens in the eglu & although I tend to let them have the free run for the garden, it hasn't been possible for a couple of weeks. I'm going to treat her with mite powder to be safe too.
Wolfie
We put the anti-feather pecking spray Ukadex (have I spelt that right?) on the victim hens, boy is that stuff VILE. But it does wear off, and then Snowy was back to feather pecking. It was such a confirmed vice, she even did it whilst they were free ranging in the garden. Just couldn't resist yanking someone else's knickers and gobbling the evidence. Yes, of course, check for the usual lice, mites etc. I like Xeno 450, one pipette kills all known "visitors". You actually have to weigh the hen - what fun! Let us know how you get on!
