Basset Hounds & chickens - good to get along?

Recommended Posts

I've just had a look in my dog breed book for you and it says they are good with other pets

As they were bred to hunt rabbits and hares I'm not sure they wouldnt get excited by a flapping and/or running chicken

In saying that I think a lot of it comes down to the individual dog and its temprement.

training plays a big part as does desensitising the dog but I know 100% that my well trained terrier will grab a flapping chicken

I don't think you can ever trust any dog 100%. My cocker spaniel is very calm most of the time and used to seeing chickens at clost quarters, but in the summer, one of my ex-bats tried to peck at a little titbit the dog had - and she snapped! Nothing more than a fright to the chicken but it could have been worse.

So I'd say never leave them along together and always supervise.

We have five jack russels who live outdoors. They've lived with our free range chickens (when we had them) and now with our duck, with no problems - and it's not as though they're 'laid back' terriers! ;)

However I must say they have been brought up with chickens/ducks since pups. I'm sure that has made all of the difference to how they act.

I was really surprised at this post as I didn't think you liked dogs! But you did make me laugh when you said they looked like Ruby :eh: ......Fred Bassett? Naaaaaa! :D

We left Ruby inside when the chickens were freeranging, and do the same with Milly - she is much more livelier than Ruby was and I really woudn't trust her with them, definitely more training needed!
