Gingersnapgirls6
Hi there, I'm relatively new to keeping hens (6 ex-bats) and after 3 months of good health, 2 of the girls seem poorly and both have similar symptoms - hunched up, disinterested, puffed up feathers and this white watery poo. Also, one of the girls seems to have passed a really soft egg shell and I found yoke on her feathers. They both seem to still be eating etc, I've seperated them from the others. If anyone has any advice it would be greatly appreciated.
Ain't Nobody Here
Welcome to the forum . Sorry to hear about your poorly girls . Have they been wormed recently?
staceychristie
Have you changed the feed? Do they have regular changed clean water? Anything 'interesting' in the poo? Stacey
Egghead68
You can send off poo samples to Retfords and have them analysed quite cheaply.
Gingersnapgirls6
Hi, thank you to all who replied. The girls seem a bit more perky today. I change their water twice daily, haven't wormed them as yet, although will be soon. My other 4 girls seem to be fine, they are still laying unlike the 2 poorly ones. Thanks again. Egghead68
Could be brachyspira. See my thread below "Feed passing straight through chickens".
sandyhas3chucks
Could be brachyspira. See my thread below "Feed passing straight through chickens". that was my immediate thought as ALL mine presented with watery splats had ,,confirmed by tests Bracy . fortunately it clears up really well with one on 2 courses of Denegard. Bracy also causes egg problems but that almost goes without saying really as they are poorly, but the studies/trials swrote it up!! fastest best thing is post samples retfords next day delivery and you ring for results after 2 days might need to wait 3,,,, then get them to send out meds. nxt day delivert. No vets in Surrey keep denegard either..
Egghead68
Although mine's is persisting after 2 courses double strength tylan and one of denegard...
sandyhas3chucks
Although mine's is persisting after 2 courses double strength tylan and one of denegard... yes I appear to be having problems also, with one or two. It is a right "B", soon as they have the denegard 2 days and poo returns to perfect...????? Finish the course and 2 days later one or other starts again ... I do wonder about this dosing in the water????
Egghead68
Yes - mine seem to hate the taste and hardly drink (even when I put Ribena in the water in desperation). I spoke to Libby at Retfords and she said she'd never had a problem with them not drinking it before. She said I mustn't syringe it into them without diluting it but she didn't tell me the dilution. I think I'm going to give mine a break from the antibiotics for now, anyhow, and see whether they can just shake it off themselves.
sandyhas3chucks
the dilution would be the same as you mix, but how much they should get is???? My vet is back on Friday will see what he suggests. mine drank but how much is enough???
Egghead68
Would be very grateful if you could post the amount the vet suggests, Sandy. I think another problem is that they keep reinfecting themselves from their contaminated droppings. Not sure how to prevent this entirely.
