Chicken feed - the girls know what they like!

Recommended Posts

Until today, the girls have been on Omlet chicken feed and always gobbled the lot with no problems. I have ordered Gavo layers pellets with a man nearby and I'm waiting for him to let me know he has them. But as I've not heard anything I went to the pet shop to buy Organic layers pellets. I spent a small fortune buying horse bedding/feed as well. Well I brought the 20kg pellets home to find they only had 9days left of the use by date. I was rather disappointed as it's a 40min journey to and from the pet shop. I rang them and was informed I had two options: 1) Have £5 cash back on the bag (and that pellets were almost £16) or wait to exchange when another delivery comes. The man kept telling me 'it's not going to harm them to feed it to them'. As if I was being fussy.

Anyway, I've ordered Garvo feed online and hopefully it'll be here tomorrow. In the meantime I bought a very small bag of basic layers pellets and the girls won't touch the stuff. :wall: I feel rather guilty seeing them stare at me, wondering where their edible food is. :?

Will they survive on corn and treats for the day? Ahhh... don't know what else to do. I could always open this bag of Organic layers pellets (the now 8 days 'use by' feed)...? I can never remember my parents hens being this fussy!

I had something similar last week..

Was fed up spending a fortune on the delivery charge from Wiggly Wiggler, they have been on there layers for almost 2 years. Drove almost an hour to buy the Garvo layers and the Girls went on hunger strike for a full 2 days :(

My son even phoned me at work to say they were shouting all day long.. but now they tuck into it quite happily.

Mind you if I was a new Chicken mummy may have been different, I know try and be in charge most of the time.

They will not Starve themselfs.. Good luck.

Thanks, Margaret. I am a bit worried because they're standing around, perhaps even looking for an escape from their run. I feel so sorry for them. I haven't seen them eating and the grubs look untouched. This is a lesson learnt for me. I just thought that they liked the Omlet food then they couldn't be too worried about change, because they weren't fed that at the poultry place/shop - they were fed Garvo actually, so hopefully they'll remember it and eat it (when it comes)! I've ordered Omlet feed again too just incase, I know they like that at least.

... Poor hungry girls. I feel bad.

Until your Garvo arrives, I'd hold out with the bag you have opened rather than opening the one you can take back and swap. Your chooks are just being like children who wanted fish fingers rather than sausages for supper. They'll eat it if they feel hungry

Which Omlet food did you use? I've been using Garvo Alpha Mix but find that the girls just pick out the tasty bits and leave the pellety bits. The trouble is, I don't want to order a huge sack of anything in case they turn their little beaks up at it. :anxious:

I took the Organic bag back to the shop today, I just wouldn't feel happy giving food past it's use by date - I want them to have their goodness. Fingers crossed my Garvo feed will be here tomorrow - I am awaiting 2 bags of Garvo pellets from 2 different suppliers and ordered Omlet food today - so 3 bags to come.

I use the "Organic Omlet Chicken Feed 10kg". They are like large crumbs rather than pellets, and no waste, they shovel the stuff down and as I say, they weren't even on that feed before they arrived. I'm only nowtrying to change over to a different feed for convenience. Try it, CC. I'd be interested to know if yours like it too.

Yeah I will do, well I suppose it depends on when the food arrives. Flippin eck, 3 bags of food and 3 hens! I know Omlet feed has a shelf life of 6 weeks...

Apparently my father bumped into the courier and has picked up the chicken food for me - it could be Omlet or it could be Garvo. Whatever it is I can't wait to give it to the girls, they've got to be a bit more than peckish now! I've got another hour until he gets home...

Well, have they all tucked into that Garvo now? Do they lurve it?

Well, it came late this afternoon. They had a little peck at it but I think they've got used to having more treats than usual due to their dislike to ordinary layers pellets. They prefer it but I think they were awaiting treats and corn. Omlet feed should be here tomorrow so then it'll be Garvo vs Omlet.

I have also been using the Garvo Alfamix and they absolutely love it - but I agree - they do end up picking out all the tasty bits and leaving the pellets...... I have just ordered a large bag of the Garvo layers pellets and I thought I would only put this out in the morning - and then put the Alfamix out later on in the day. I do wish someone nearby stocked Garvo though - have had to pay £11.50 carriage charge from RH Miller!

Do let us know which they prefer (For an official tasting, they musn't see the label  )

When mine have finished their Garvo I might try the Omlet one if your girls prefer that.

I know the Garvo feed is still fairly new to them but they ate with much more enthusiasm with the Omlet food.

Omlet food has just been delivered. I've put small piles of food in the run - Garvo and Omlet, and they're going for Omlet. I wanted them to like Garvo as everyone rates it, and they do eat it, but not like the Omlet stuff - they gobble it down! Do let me know, Cheaky Chook, if you try the Omlet food. I'd be interested to know if your girls are the same.

Just had a thought. Will do another test tomorrow (how pathetic am I?!). I have the Go grub and the Classic grub. They much prefer eating out of the Classic. I'll put the Garvo in the Classic grub and the Omlet in the Go grub tomorrow and see what they go for. ;)

dixie chick, I got my Garvo layers pellets from eBay. The carriage charge is high but it's high with Omlet too. *sigh*

Every time that I've changed the food I feed to my girls (depends on where I can get it and when), they largely ignore it for the first few days before deciding that actually, it's all fine and really quite tasty after all. Chooks are not really that fussy, they're just creatures of habit when it comes to layers pellets. I supplement with chopped veg for the first few days of any new food introduction.

I thought so too, Ailie. But they were fed Garvo before they came to me and scoffed the Omlet food straight away when they got here, so the change from Garvo to Omlet didn't bother them. I've only gone through a 10kg bag of Omlet food which lasted a fortnight so they haven't been on it long.

Thanks for the tip of chopped veg.

Thanks, Chestnutmare. I've not got much Garvo Alpha mix left now so here goes for the Omlet food :) My doves adore the Garvo dove food so I'll still be asking for Garvo from Newlands Poultry and will probably add in an order for Garvo treats when I next place the dove food order. Then when . . . if . . . my chooks are good girls they can have some of those nice Garvo bits that they always scoff from off the top of the Alpha mix.

Watch out with those Grub tests . . . you might need to trial the different coloured Grubs  Mine is bright pink.

Just so I know I have the right grub . . . is the classic the little double round one? That is the sort I have.

I like to have the best for them - nutter that I am :anxious:

My Go came with the feeder seen in the bottom picture here which they ate out of fine until I got this bad boy. I think it's because they don't have to get their heads so far in, so it's easier to eat out of. Do you have that one in pink? I think I need that one in pink. :D

I top up the feeder every day except one, by which time it's all pellets. It always rains here at least once a week so they stay in their run and have no choice but to eat it.

Yes that's the one I have in pink along with a bright pink glug. I did have a red one but spendthrift that I am, I found I 'needed' :liar: one in pink and gave my red one away. I'm not sure my chooks cared one way or the other but I'm dead chuffed with the pink set. I've even got a little pink scoop now to go with it . . . and yes, a pink apron too. Am I sad or what? :anxious: I blame that picture on Cinnamon's signature for my current pink craze

 That sounds like something I would do - colour co-ordinating! I'm sure your chooks care that you're so thoughtful. I actually like the pink eglu... I secretly want one.
