fluffyfeet Posted February 2, 2011 Share Posted February 2, 2011 I need to get away from things for a weekend/few days on my own and OH has suggested going somewhere with either a craft workshop included or where I can take something of my own that has people to help if I get stuck. (I currently have numerous things hanging about the place where I've got stuck and don't know who to ask for help) My tastes are 'eclectic' to say the least, and I'm always up for trying something new or different as long as it is interesting. I'm after something where I will become so absorbed in what I'm doing that I can 'let go' of everything else, even for just a short period of time. As I'm typing this I would even consider a cave with a candle - Yes things are that bad! So if anyone has any suggestions please put them forward. I am going to trawl t'interweb as well. Thanks. Plum Posted February 2, 2011 Share Posted February 2, 2011 I did this weekend a number of years ago and it was great. http://www.maggiemartin.co.uk/ I went by myself and there was a family group there as well. The grandmother was doing soft furnishings and covering a chair, the mother was making something else but I can't remember what and the little girl was doing lots of fun crafts. I made a fabric landscape. We had a relaxing time and lots of laughs. Home made food and lots of home made crafts around Maggie's home. We had a trip up to Whitby to a fabric/ craft shop, whiff of sea air and dive around the shops and harbour. Maggie had to chuck us out of her lovely workshop well after midnight. Olly Posted February 2, 2011 Share Posted February 2, 2011 My friend went to The Manor House Hotel a couple of years ago, she said it was good, but she went with her husband and family - it might not be quite the relaxing, get away from it all, thing that you want. I'd choose a particular craft and focus on that - my sister does loads of things in the summer, quilting, watercolours etc, so if you search for something specific you'll probably find one. Omletina Kyckling Posted February 3, 2011 Share Posted February 3, 2011 Hi Fluffyfeet, you would be most welcome at Omletstock March 12/13th. I think my house if full in terms of bed space, but there is a nice hotel within walking distance of my house and we'd water and feed you!! The idea is that you bring something along which you want to do craftwise, or you can try something new. Glass painting was popular last time (and I have lots of glass paints, so just bring jars!) as was crocheting. We're not terribly focussed and are very easily distracted by tea, coffee and cakes, and of course wine on the Saturday night! For those who want to try, I'm going to do another little felting workshop so people can make a couple of pieces of felt and make a flower corsage to wear on a coat or sweater. A friend and I go to the Manor House Hotel every year. It is a great place both for the crafts and for all the many activities all of which are free, but I'm not sure about how much fun it would be on your own. On weekdays in term time the average age of guests would be around 65 yrs I'd guess, my friend and I felt we had considerably lowered the average age on our arrival. However at weekends and in the school holidays there are loads of kids and they put on lots of activities especially for kids. My friend and I went on our own first of all so we could have a break from our kids and let the daddies take charge for a change. It was such fun and we knew the kids would enjoy it so much that we took the kids with us next Easter. Well, now we can't go without the kids because as soon as they find out we are planning a trip they are begging to come too. We did almost book a weekend for the two of us this spring but the kids gave us so much grief when we mentioned it, that we relented and we are going at Whitsun while the daddies go to Scotland scuba diving. So, I don't think it is the kind of thing you are looking for just at the moment, Fluffyfeet!!! But I would highly recommend it to anyone who is interested in crafts or sporting activities.
