dixie chick
I'm asking this question because I am getting impatient with 6 of my 7 girls! They are all are around 43 weeks old and only the Barnevelder has been laying eggs - one egg nearly every day since before Christmas. I am feeding them on Garvo - a mixture of layers pellets, alfamix and the chicken treats in the afternoon - so they are utterly spoiled, food-wise. They look fabulous and healthy and had their flubenet worming treatment a couple of weeks ago. Is there anything I could be doing wrong or are some hens 'barren'? Chortle Chook
I admit I've been wondering this too. My Silkies are laying away beautifully but from my two Frizzles not one ! Edited February 3, 2011 by Guest
Egluntyne
It does happen from time to time, but you would be very unlucky to have 3 of them at it. Or not! I'd cut out all treats and keep them just on layers pellets for a while as it may help. Have you checked round the garden to see if anyone is laying in a secret place? The longer days should improve matters, too. It could just be a timing issue.
Daphne
Some hens will never lay but 6 out of 7 would be the worst luck in the world It's partly the time of year, I see you have pure breeds and many will not start until the light levels improve and lengthen, could be March/April. Its also partly to do with when they were hatched, some breeds, particularly heavies like orps take ages to get ready; as a rough guide anything hatched after May won't lay till Spring (remember this is very very rough). Lastly, and this is where you can help - withhold the treats Keep them on good quality layers only; this gives them the goodness to make shells, and be fit and ready to lay. Keeping them confined seems to work as well, they can only eat what you give them, not what they take a fancy to. I also think when mine FR they find more interesting things to do then lay eggs I'm sure with a bit more patience you're girls will soon do you proud Cross posted with Egluntyne, but as I've written it you might as well read it!
