jlo
No running for me this weekend. Yesterday I did a 12 mile walk along the Kennet and Avon Canal with a group of workmates. We have done ia long walk for the last few years and we all contribute towards the Neuroblastoma Society as one of my colleagues tragically lost her little girl to that. It was a great walk. I ended up carrying a friend's little girl on my shoulders for a while and, when he was on the lead, Paddy was a bit "pully" Consequently, my back is agony today! Hope it doesn't last too long or my 6 mile run will be scuppered in two weeks' time This was a picture that I took just before The Padster jumped into the canal and swam across to meet two dogs on the other side! https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/228349_10150181964744121_576314120_6721844_3399568_n.jpg

Bramble
Week 7 run 2 completed last night 25 minutes non stop (apart from about ten seconds to tie my shoelace, does that count?) It was flippin' hard work I have to say, several times I really thought I wouldn't make it (to the end of the run, I mean, not survival! ) and for the first time I developed stitch in the last couple of minutes, ouch, any tips to avoid that, please? Ain't Nobody Here
Well done, that's fabulous . You're really getting the hang of this running lark . Not sure about stitches, I don't often get them but usually try sucking my tummy in as hard as I can (which isn't much!) till it goes. Didn't manage a much longer run as planned on Monday but did do a fairly fast paced hour or so.
Bramble
Thank you for that, I'll try the "sucking-the-tummy-in" thing, trouble is, I've got a hell of a lot of tummy to suck in ! How often do you all run?
Old Speckled Hen
Stitch. Stop running.Bend forward like you were trying to touch your toes. Count 30 secs though you may need a minute.
Bramble
Thank you, OSH, I'll definitely try that (though hope I won't get stitch again ) it'll either cure the stitch or I'll just collapse in a heap on the floor !
sparkysmum
Re stitch ; I don't eat before exercise & this helps for me. However if I do get a stitch I push my hand in where the stitch is & exhale really hard several times ( like blowing hard) sometimes works. Was going to run today but Hazie's not well
Couperwife
been out today, to guisborough walkway again i really struggled getting my breathing sorted this time, my friend suggested that I try a warm-up at the beginning to get my breathing right, then i wont struggle as much when im doing my proper run. ive also had my gait checked - this is where they make you run on a treadmill and film your feet , then they tell you that you have one leg longer than the other and you are swinging your right foot out to over compensate this is also where they tell you that you will get lower back ache (yup) and that new trainers might be a good idea, along with nice new squishy socks (well, thats what they told me anyway ) but i did get some free gel sachets cathy x
Bramble
Week 7 all finished this morning and no stitch, wahay !!
Ain't Nobody Here
Well done, Bramble . Alli, I hope Hazie's feeling better? Cathy, have you tried those gel sachets yet? My OH has started using them for his marathons and says they do seem to make a difference. He's getting some for me .
Ain't Nobody Here
Have been lacking motivation a bit recently and not been out quite as often as before . Managed to drag myself out today though and did 6 miles in 1 hour (and actually quite enjoyed it!) so am quite pleased. Now, if I can do another 6 miles in an hour, I'll do a brilliant time next Saturday . I've got a really niggly pain in my lower back though . Thinking of seeing a physio (who fixed it before) before the race.
jlo
Take it easy Vicki - lower back pain can be really tricky - as I know to my cost. Bramble - just read an older post about tying your shoelace - as far as I am concerned, that doesn't count as stopping!! I haven't been doing nearly as much as I need to because of my back and the dog and general lack of motivation. I have been walking and jogging when I have let the dog off the lead which has been ok. (Albeit my back is still quite sore!)
Bramble
Week 8 Run 1 complete, no stopping and no stitch BUT bit bothered about pace, Im barely covering 3k in 28 minutes, which is dreadful
Ain't Nobody Here
Not at all . The fact that you can now run that distance without stopping (and no stitch!) is what you should be focussing on . There's plenty of time to up your speed (not that it's necessary really, unless you want to do some races ). ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ My last long training run before the race next Saturday. Bit concerned as my thighs were a bit tight from Fri's 6 miles and yesterday's 3 miles (no choice, OH had the car ) but despite constant slight discomfort in them, I managed 12.1 miles in 2 hrs 7 mins . I tried one of OH's gel sachets half way round - no way of knowing if it helped or not .
sparkysmum
Vicki, you're just burnin' up the road What a fantastic time Well done Well despite not having trained at all hardly & been plagued by injuries (prob because I haven't trained) I did the Glasgow Womens 10k today. As always it was a fab event. 12000 women running ( I came about 5000+ ) I think, loads of bands & pipers & Radio Clyde & fab Glasgow crowds. I finished in 1 hr 7 mins which although very slow I was happy with as I wasn't injured Good luck next week Vicki. Hopefully will be there to cheer you on. Alli xx
Ain't Nobody Here
Well done, Alli . That's a perfectly good time . If you do come to Loch Leven (which would be fab ) make sure you wave something in front of my nose as I'll have my ears plugged into very loud music . jlo
Well done everyone I am now really worried as I have a 6 mile run on Sunday and have hardly done anything for the last few weeks (apart from walking the dog!) Today The Padster is at the vet so I decided to see how quickly I could do 6 miles. I did have to walk for some of the way as my back was quite sore and I did 6 in 1 hour 10 minutes and then walked the last two miles home with the occasional jog - so 8 miles in 1 hour 35 minutes and I am completely and utterly
Bramble
Wow, that sounds FAB Jlo, well done!
sparkysmum
Sounds pretty well perfect to me jlo I am taking a much more relaxed view of my running these days If I can't get out 3 x wk, evry week well thats too bad. The worst that going to happen is that ANH & Couperwife will be in the pub before I'm even finished when we do the G.N.R. in September

Ain't Nobody Here
Can't promise we won't drink it though . Alli, I'm sure we'll all run together - otherwise I'll never find you at the end . I had a really painful 4th toe yesterday . I've slathered Ibuleve on it a few times and I think it's recovering . My legs feel fine so I'll be really cross if my toe isn't OK on the day . Bramble
Week 8 all finished this morning. Only one more week to go, but fear I'm nowhere near doing 5k yet
Ain't Nobody Here
Well done . I bet you'll surprise yourself if you do try 5k . Don't worry about speed, just try to complete the distance - I bet you can . And if you can't now, you soon will . Thankfully, my toe seems to have recovered . Might try a very short run this evening just to make sure .
