Freckles the Cockerel - New Photo

Recommended Posts

Went to visit a friend earlier who I have had some lovely pekins from, I went to see her new Croads who were beautiful :D Anyway she has a frizzle pekin cockerel called Freckles (she has had him a couple of weeks to save him from the chop  ) He is very handsome and while I was there very quiet, she said I can have him to go in with my pekins but if the neighbours complain he can go back.

What shall I do (I would really like him :P ) but obviously don't want to upset my neighbours (even the horrid ones  ) and if I do have him should I tell them ? Or to keep quiet and if they say something then say he's not staying ? Luckily I had to come to work after seeing him so couldn't take him then

Go for it

I wouldn't say anthing to the neighbours either. Cockerels, if you can keep them, are such fun. They are not only glam but real characters too and fun to watch as they point out little bits for their hens. Pekin cockerels are supposed to be rather quiet. My neighbour has one and he is far quieter than my Silkie cockerel. I hardly hear him. I also have a friend with one and though she lives in a very built up area she has had no problems. Of course you might always get one objector but if you do and they still object after a week or so, he can go back.

What's to loose :D

Even if they do complain to the environmental health guys, judging by another thread on here a couple of weeks back, you only get a letter to start with and then the complainant has to go to all the trouble of keeping records etc. That could take quite some time and you'd probably be gone by then anyway.

If you do tell people before you get your (note the 'your' ) boy, then they will be waiting for a noise and will be all prepared to object even before he makes so much as a peep.

Aha! That's my boy  He comes full circle back to the Omlet forum  I hatched him from eggs I bought on Ebay from someone who is a member on here. Alma from Practical Poultry offered to save him from the chop so off he went  I'm Phoebejo over there

I hope you don't mind !!! I didn't want to say too much or get Alma into trouble - he's lovely :D

My Pekin boy isn't really loud, just a high pitched squeak. Oh how i'd love a lavender Pekin boy now, too.

Would go GREAT with your Mottled girl. We need pictures!

If the neighbours complain.. Claim its a girl!:lol: ..

Actually Molly my pilkie makes such a racket when she lays she will probably be louder :lol:

I've not had to introduce a cockerel to an established group of girlies but I have introduced several new hens to my clan and firmly believe that having a cockerel makes it easier. I put the new girly (girlies) in with my little cockerel on their own and then later introduce any other girls from his current harem. Each time my Dill seems to have said 'Another girl suits me, now y'all just get along' and get along they do :D

and he's LOUD :lol: Popped him into a run on his own at first and he started crowing I think due to stress as have never heard him crow on the 2 occasions I had seen him. Popped Magpie in with him for company and he is quiet now and they are getting on fine (she is a bit miffed though as missing out of fring :( ) Will add some pics later :D

Not great didn't want to stress him out too much as just moved his ladies (he ended up with the choc girls) !

In the last one I had put him in the WIR with the girls as they were going to bed but Squeak (pekin/silkie cross) attacked him and he landed on his back  So I'm going to pop him in his own little coop in the WIR at bedtime until they have integrated a bit more - it's not going to be easy
