Curtains

Recommended Posts

As soon as its dark enough for the lights to go on,the curtains & blinds come down here,& we are overlooked by no one at all.

I like to feel 'tucked in' & closing the curtains does that for me.

The only exception to the rule is in mid summer when its hot out - the curtains stay open at the back of the house so the windows can stay open too.

My living room is at the back of the house, so can't be seen from the road. It can be overlooked from the neighbour's garden at the back, but he is never out 'after hours' so no worry about anyone peeping in. That said, I always close the curtains in winter as it feels so much cosier. In the summer I'm not so bothered, the warmth seems to make a difference for some reason!

I generally close curtains at dusk to keep the warmth in. However I love the fact that we're not overlooked by anyone and don't have to close them to prevent nosy parkers looking in. However I have to remember we still have postmen, delivery men, schoolfriends of the boys coming round at all times of the day so can't wander around 'as nature intended  '

Slightly off topic...any tips for cleaning the cord pulls for curtains? We've just moved into a different rented house and all the curtains are closed using pull cords and they are seriously grim and yucky. The simplest option is to take the existing curtain rails down and replace them but there are 7 sets of windows and some of them are very large  It would cost me a fortune to replace them all and as the landlords lived in the house for a couple of years I don't think they are bothered about them. But I am :vom:

In winter, definitely closed as soon as it's dusk, not for fear of anybody looking in, but to keep the warmth in! Once we are into warmer weather, I'll probably leave them open, but close at bedtime so "Ooops, word censored!"ody can come snooping. "Ooops, word censored!"ody can look in to me unless they specifically walk right around to the front of my house so I'm not in fear of being seen. I sleep with about 2/3 of the curtains closed so the light awakens me in the morning.

....I may be having second thoughts on this though, as my plumber was here yesterday and was telling me he has a telescope in his loft and he pointed out his house which is across the valley from me....I got a text last night saying he could see my bedroom lights were on!!!!:shock: He lives a long way below me though so wouldn't be able to actually see me, but still!!..... :anxious:

Closed when it gets dark in the winter, just to keep the warmth in.

In the summer they are open.

We have voile curtains down to the floor in the bedroom and these are usually drawn all the time. I've got used to sleeping with the sun coming in on a summer's morn.

Talking of curtains we have pretty embroidered voile ones in the bathroom. I had the window replaced when we moved in and I hate frosted glass so the pane is plain.

Are they meant to be white? If so, try kitchen roll which has been soaked in bleach, wring out so not dripping wet. Wrap it around the cord, and then cover with cling-film. Leave for an hour, or longer if necessary, then remove, wipe with a damp cloth to remove the bleach and they should be all nice and white again :D Obviously protect everything as bleach does work very well on things you don't want white as well  I've done this on my blind cords and bathroom pull cord and it comes up a treat :D

Oooh good tip there.

Er, not keen on the plumber with the telescope!!! :anxious:

Years ago when the kiddies were little we took them (and the inlaws) to see a street near Theale that go crazy with Christmas lights - many of the houses collect for charities. Above a petrol station there was a young lad - 20's ish - walking around pretty well starkers - at least it looked like it because he would have had really droopy drawers otherwise. What does MIL do? Go "WHOOHOOOOOOO!" as loud as is possible.

Closed, I like my privacy! I did do without living room curtains for a few months and I got used to managing without, but you still have to think twice before you do something you wouldn't normally do in public. So the curtains went back up and now I can relax again.

It also makes a HUGE difference to the amount of heat lost/cold coming in through the double glazing.
