Donna C
Hi all, Well my much awaited wir is due thursday morning, 6x6x9. I have called the lovely people at omlet and they tel me i can fit 3 lf in my go with that run. I have two who get on great My question is my oh would like one more girl as we lost all 3 ex-batts last year and did love having 3. Now do i play it safe and stay with 2, do i introduce another same age hen ( mine only started laying at christmas) Do i intoduce a pullet? I do have a separate coop to put in run for as long as i need it so can go really slow. My heart say yes, my head says no. So i thought i'd ask all the lovely people on the forum. Many thanks
Tweety
Hi, tbh you would be much better off introducing 2 new girls if you have room. It is generally not recommended to introduce one on her own, although you have got the facilities to do so very slowly and it may be ok. I don't know if your new WIR is big enough for 4 but, if it is, I would go down that route.
Plum
9 x 6 run you can easily have 4. Go for another 2 would be my advice.
Donna C
I would love 4 but only have a go and don't think it's big enough for 4 lf. I do have wooden ark which i will use for intro's but don't want to keep all the time due to mites etc.Any idea's would be great
welshchwcks
My advice, based on last weeks introduction of 1 new hen ... DON'T DO IT ha ha ha! I got 2 hens in Feb and decided to add one more. Got her last week and as the other two have a good temperament I put the new chwck straight in......i can hear you all gasping from here They 'went' for her straight away so we decided to separate them for a few days......it has worked thank god! They don't 'square up' to each other now but there is a definite hierarchy of hens going on. My own fault I should have researched it better before chucking her in oops After reading up on it now I would have introduced 2 rather than 1. Good luck xx
Sam
Isn't a Go the same size as a classic? If so, we have 4 comfortably in the classic.
Plum
If they are hybrids or smaller then quite a few people have 4 in one
Donna C
I'm not sure if i'd fit 4 large fowl in a go with a 6x6x9 wir Can anyone in the know help out with this, or would i be o.k to slowly introduce 1. Or better to stick with my two?????
Plum
Minimum is 1 sq metre of run per hen. I would always give them more room (quickly calculates her run)
Donna C
We would have just over 4 meters squared but the whole reason of the wir was to give them more room so don't really want to fill it with too many girls. Do you think introducing one girl slowly would be o.k??
Lavenders_Blue
Introducing one new girl is entirely possible, but not generally recommended. The two established girls are likely to be quite mean to her and she will bear the brunt of all their aggression as your new girl won't have a friend to share the bullying. If you do go for it, I'd say don't pick a breed that is known to be more submissive/is prone to being bullied and take it V-E-R-Y slowly. Tweety
You could make extra room in the WIR by adding perches, logs, shelves etc and one more girl isn't really going to make that much difference - unless you are thinking of Orpingtons! Donna C
Yes, I have two orpingtons and wanted to add a 3rd. Got a 6x6x9 wir and a go
Tweety
Well, that does rather change things! You won't be able to get 4 Orps into a Go if they are anything like the size of my Kristina, so it looks as if it will have to be 3 and a long, slow introduction. Kristina is a very gentle girl and, if yours are similarly natured, the intro process might not be as bad as with some feistier breeds. Donna C
Thats what i thought, my girls are BIG so think just one would be fine. They are gentle but i'll take it slow. Going to call breeder now see what she thinks re age etc. Many thanks
