My daughters school,once again.....

Recommended Posts

This is truly beyond belief.

My youngest is in her GCSE year & has been working on coursework & case studies in all subjects since last year.

Last summer she handed in a piece of Science work along with the rest of the class, for the teacher to do an initial grade on. This was supposed to be given back to the students so they could work on improvements as a class before handing it in for grading as part of their GCSE.

Unfortunately on his way home Cleos science teacher had an awful motorbike accident, which he barely survived

He had the work in his rucksack & it was handed back to the school, but Cleos went missing. as she had handed it in early it was thought that it was at the teachers house, but no one could ask him obviously.

There was no initial concern, but I did raise it with her tutor a couple of times, as she is also a Science teacher.

Her teacher came back after Christmas, & Cleos work was found stuffed behind a chair in the staffroom

The rest of the class had by this time worked on their pieces, upped their initial grades & submitted them for GCSE marking.

Cleos work has only been graded this week.

Because it was so late she now doesn't have the opportunity to work further on the piece, which was very much in draft form....she has been graded with a D, & she is an A/B student in Science.

Obviously I am spitting mad, as I have chased & chased this & I feel that my girl is now at a real disadvantage.

Just wanted to vent!

I would have thought that because of the extraordinary cicumstances there must be a way for the school to get extra time for you daughter to submit her re-worked coursework.

Good luck with this and I hope that you get it sorted. They put so much work in it must be horrible for her. :(

Ooh, tricky one. I think, realistically she should be given it back and make any amendments to it this week and try to get any extra marks for it. I know the circumstances aren't brilliant, but at least it wasn't lost forever.

My school lost all of my year 10 classwork for art-we only found out in February time when it all had to be pulled together for checking of marks and moderation. They had to go on the marks they'd already given me...I'm still annoyed even now-I did get an A* overall though!

Phone up the school and ask to speak to the exams officer/secretary, explain what has happened, the exams secretary may be able to submit her predicted grade instead of the grade the coursework got (or something along those lines), as I think this falls under special consideration.

I wouldnt think that the school would be happy with an A/B student only getting a D... they have targets to meet.

speak to the head of Science and see what they can do. they might be able to submit her work at the higher grade and then give her the opportunity to get the work to that grade, or even look at her other coursework (she MUST have done other pieces of coursework)

hope this helps

(((hugs)))

I agree with Cathy but also wanted to add that there is an external deadline for coursework submission for all boards which is May 7th unless I am very mistaken - I have just done a quick check on AQA GCSE Science and theirs is May 7th. This is the absolute final date fro submission to the board. Each school will have its own individual deadlines for internal moderation etc, but could make an exception in your daughter's case. There are three weeks until we break up for Easter, in fact for some schools it is 4 weeks. So enough time to redo and resubmit. It is inconvenient yes but Kids matter!! End of!! I was Head of Science for 14 years and would not have wanted a good student getting a D grade for coursework, I would have ensured that he/she redid the piece or a new piece etc etc... So my advice is negotiate, circumstances clearly out of Cleo's control and there is still some time left - just. It needs to be actioned by them now though.

Hope this helpsx

It does,thanks very much.

Her tutor emailed the head of science yesterday,so I am hoping for some sort of response today.

Coincidently Cleos Diploma teacher emailed me yesterday afternoon too. Some of you may remember that I had big problems with her before...................

She says that 2 pieces of work are missing from Cleos Diploma coursework....but she had already marked them,so they must have been there then, surely?

It is now that they are with a moderator that they are missing.

You couldn't make it up,really :?

 Now the science coursework going missing you can understand although quite how it ended up stuffed behind a chair is odd :?

But for her coursework to go missing after the teacher has marked it... I'm just speechless.

Does Cleo know if coursework going missing is a bigger problem ? if teachers only tell the person whose coursework they have lost it may not be obvious there is a trend.

Apparently there are 3 pupils who have had Diploma work disappear.

Very worrying.

The teacher, who I have already established has a problem with both Cleo and myself has said that Cleo now must come in on a day they had been given off to re do the work.

I have said point blank that she is not going in that day.......its in lieu of working on a Saturday, which happens to be my other daughters 18th birthday,so we had to s"Ooops, word censored!" the plans we had for that day and reschedule them for the day off instead!

Exactly, which is why I am in no frame of mind to help.

The teacher marked and graded it,but it also needs to go to an external moderator to make sure it was marked correctly.

I guess it would be impossible for him to assess if its not complete, but as you say,its not my daughters fault.

I'd be asking for a look at the the grievance procedure here. Your daughter has fulfilled her part of the 'contract' in the Home/School policy or whatever your school calls it, by handing in her completed work well on time. It is "Ooops, word censored!"ody's fault but theirs that things have gone wrong, and they should be sorting it out and offering a grovelling apology.

Hi

Do they not issue some kind of dated receipt for 'high states' homework ? (if only to protect themselves against naughty children claiming to have handed work in on time who haven't).

Do they not have a written procedure for handling 'high states' homework ? (They must surely have a policy for handling late submissions etc.)

This is shocking, but it's not the first time I've heard of these kind of issues.

In Scotland it's Highers not GCSEs. A friends son was an A student in English along with many of his friends. When they sat the exam at the end of the year the entire class failed  After an investigation it was found the teacher was at fault

Good luck I really hope your daughter gets a better grade.

When I was in my final year at Comprehensive many moons ago I had handed in my English portfolio with all my pieces of completed work, most of which were marked so it was just the last couple of essays to be assessed and that would make up part of my final mark.

And that was the last time I ever saw it, and English Language was my strongest subject so I was obviously gutted.

Took it 12 months later at college and passed with Distinction.

I would certainly ask for the Greivance Procedure - and possibly just asking for it might be the catalyst for the school to sort this out properly.

Best of luck.
