Leicester_H
Hi Cutting a LONG story short. We had 2 omlet girls - Chikki & Boo (April 2007). Chicki died. (July 2009) Got Smokie & Lily (Aug 2009). Boo did not accept Smokie & Lily until Christmas 2009. All seemed OK. [ + + ] Approx. March (2010) Boo pecked big hole in Smokie - vets - baytril. So put Boo in one run next to Lily & Smokie in separate eglu and run. [ ] [ + ] Summer 2010, Lily starts serious feather pulling. So put bare chested Smokie in separate run and Lily and Boo in other run (as Boo was top chook and could take care of herself). [ + ] [ ] Feather pulling gradually got worse over time (anti peck spray did nothing) - Yesterday got home to find Boo with bleeding wound and Lily with a bloody beak!! Boo was frantic to get to me and away from Lily. So put Boo in a dog crate and brought her into kitchen over night. I have some Baytril left, so I am giving that to her (same dose as before). [ ] [ ] [ ] Didn't take Boo back outside until it had warmed up a bit - she seemed to really like it in the kitchen - lots of attention - being talked to all the time! Snowy is coming over on Monday to fit a bumper bit to Lily. I was then planning to put Lily & Smokie in together (as they came together and hopefully Lily won't be able to feather full (at least for a while)) and put Boo in own run to recover - does this sound like a plan ? [ + ] [ ] Dog crate is quite small (like show pen size (ish)) - I assume she'll be OK for a fews days in that ? - she will free range for a bit as well. OH is being to think they are more trouble than they are worth! Have we just been unlucky ?? Any comments / suggestions ?? H
Plum
Sounds like a nightmare! How about a bumper bit for all of them and put the runs together so they have more room, add lots of perches and obstacles and put them all together when healed

Leicester_H
Sounds like a nightmare! Quite! How about a bumper bit for all of them Maybe - but I don't like using them except when absolutely necessary. Boo is still trying to KILL Smokie (when all out FR), so I just can't trust them together. I think Smokie would be terriefied in a run with Boo (BB or no BB). Smokie doesn't peck anyone, so she doesn't need one. add lots of perches and obstacles and put them all together when healed The do have quite a few perches and obstacles - don't think I could fit anymore reasonably. Chickens - who'd 'av 'em ?? H

Guest
I had to put bumper bits of all twelve of my chickens at one time - because of all the feather picking etc. They had plastic ones. I felt sorry for them at first, then I got used to it - they just looked like punk girls. I left them on for a year, some fell off gradually after/during the winter months - and I took off the last one when I had to clip her wings again this month. The bits don't seem to worry them (after the first night) and they ate and drank as usual. They did still jab instead of pecking for a while, then didn't even bother doing that. Good luck
