Did you paint or stain your WIR after 1st year ,ideas please

Recommended Posts

All your walk in runs are fantastic. I know most of the photos were taken when the runs were new so i was wondering did you paint or stain your run and if so which colour. I am looking to brighten up our walk in covered run as its in a shady side of the house. There is a lot of wood to paint/stain as it started out as a fenced area for chooks, then we built it up higher and put a plastic corrugated roof on top. Thankyou

I haven't got a WIR but I do have a wood/weldmesh run. I left it with its original weatherproofing wood coloured stain/preserver (?) for 1 year which was a grungy chestnut, painted it white with exterior emulsion the next year (but only because I got a new white house and it looked prettier!) and again last year because I find it gets a bit green in places (damp) and the paint flakes off slightly in a few areas, but the underlying wood preserver is still there. I could probably get away with leaving it this year, but I may paint it again. One of my neighbours has had hers for 3 years this summer and never bothered with re-weather proofing it and its fine. Another neighbour has some 40 year old structure and to my knowledge that hasn't been touched for the past 6 years!

Thankyou for your reply. Ours was pressure treated and hubby wants to stain it, i just don't want it too dark. He says we can see the colours at the diy shop but they always look different to me on the little sample, i just can't judge very well how the whole thing will look stained.

I haven't done mine in 3 years and it looks fine but I'm planning on doing it at Easter :) . I don't want to change the colour so have bought clear wood preservative. I put preservative on our new driveway gate and was really disappointed with the colour. It said "oak finish" on the label but came out bright orange  . It's slightly better with a second coat but I bought such a large tub I'm going to have to stick with it :( .

Didn't want to make the same mistake with my lovely WIR :? .

I stained the girls bench with a colour called Iris on the tin it looked lovely. It's the colour of the omlet blue so not what I expected :( (sorry those with a lovely blue eglu  )

Why not have a look on the WIR picture thread and if you see a colour you like ask the person what they used :D

I painted mine using Cuprinol garden shades wild thyme, a heritage colour, greeny blue.

I'm not at the point where I need to restain but I did mine for the first time at weekend-used a ronseal stain-I think its Wild Sage or called something very similar and it looks very similar to yours I think-but then I am a little colour blind!!
