sadietoo
OK...so I know the food police would like to see these banned, but I want one to make falafel...nothing else works quite as well as deep frying them and i hate deep frying in an open basket on our unpredictable ceramic hob...tooo scary by half... So....does anyone have a cheap and cheerful one of these that they can recommend? ...I'm not interested in spending the sort of money an Actifry would cost, as I really won't use it that often.... as usual omleteers, many thanks for taking the time to read this, and I will value your comments and advicex
craftyhunnypie
To be honest I think everyone on here will recommend the Actifry. Far far healthier than a normal fryer! However, if just for falafel ( mm mm mmm), could you not form the mix into balls, put into a bun tin, spray with fry light & bake them instead? Geoid
I can recommend Delonghi deep fat fryers. I have had one for years (before actifry was invented!) and it is still going strong (touch wood). Try and get one with the Easy Clean system, it has a tube which allows the oil to be drained easily.

Thanks...I have always made my falafel that way, but equally my OH always grumbles that they aren't the real thing, (my brother in law lives in Israel so unfortunately for me OH is a bit of a connoisseur )...then I visited L'as du Falafel in Paris, and it reminded me how good the real thing tastes..crispy on the outside, meltingly soft and lovely on the inside (gosh I'm hungry now!!) ..so as we don't have them very often.....I thought I wouldn't worry too much about being "healthy" and cook them properly.... Thanks Fred for the heads up on the Delonghi ones...I had them quite high up on my list, and so I will go for one of those....

redhotchick
I saw this dinky little fryer last weekend. Only needs one litre of oil. http://www.lakeland.co.uk/12919/Lakeland-Compact-Fryer

majorbloodnock
To be honest, I can't think of a time when I've needed a deep fat fryer and my wok hasn't been fine for the job. I certainly make my chips in it, and it's the traditional means of cooking tempura, so might it not be worth trying the falafel in one too? Rhapsody
frankly it just keeps a large quantity of oil in one place for reuse and the lid and filters mean the kitchen is a pleasant place!
