peebles
Hello, could use your expertise here please chickeners. Tiny Tim went very very broody the past week or so. Today, she seems to be starting to break thanks to all our efforts. Mucking them out, I noticed she wasn't as active as the other girls and one eye looked to be very sore. I picked her up and turned her on her side and she opened the eye and it instantly looked clear and better. There were tiny bubbles of fluid in the corner of her eye (perhaps from not blinking/keeping eye closed?) I put her down and the eye returned to it's normal sorry state. On the ground, it looks oval in shape and she tries to keep it shut. Only one eye is affected. Has another chicken bullied her or is it more sinister? Thanks
gongladosh
Sounds like she's got Mycoplasma - it's a bacterial infection. You'll need to get her to the vet for antibiotics. If not treated, it could develop into rattly breathing and all sorts of problems (it can cause a form of pneumonia!) It's very easy to treat with a week of Baytril ot Tylan. It's probs best that you separate her from the other hens so she doesn't infect them too.
peebles
Yeah I was hoping it was a scratch and not mycoplasma! Wishful thinking maybe. I did get concerned it was mycoplasma when I saw the small fluid bubbles, but had raised hopes as she seems a lot happier now. She's in a separate pen due to broodiness anyway but I will book her in for some treatments & a chicken check up. Will I need to clean their coop with anything? peebles
Bathed the eye in sal"Ooops, word censored!"er solution last night and today no oval-ness of the eyelid at all and no bubbles in either corner of the eye when I tilt her and have a good old look. Should I still take her to the Chick Clinic for a mycoplasma check or was it a scratch after all? No one else seems to have dodgy eyes. Thanks for the help
