Well, the new lad (Cyrus) handsome fella that he is has very few basic commands, including recall He's been on a long line and is starting to recall much better now that he knows what treats are for, but he has no idea of boundaries as we see them, so I have to choose carefully where I let him off as he doesn't understand that he shouldn't run out into roads

 

While he will go off to snout down holes when we are out, he eventually comes back but in the meantime, I have no idea where he is as he can move so fast . I have just got him some falconry bells to attach to his collar when he's off lead and they are marvellous as I know where to find him.

Hi, I like the idea of these. Our new lad is settling in well but as he gains in confidence his recall is less good. He is pretty good with my husband but ignores me unless I have food. I know my place.At least he is giving our Deerhound plenty of exercise.

kerryegg, have you tried using very high value treats? Mine favour homemade liver cake or those ghastly frankfurters, chopped up tiny. they don't leave my side if I have them on board!

Yes, he will do anything for the treats. Getting better each day, very early days yet. It would be easier if the deerhound was more reliable on recall. Should have got a sheepdog. Only joking, running dogs are my first and only doggy love.

Thats a good idea! Occasionally Ruby disappears into the hedge and can get quite a distance away before i even realise she has gone! Trouble is then that I have no idea which direction she has gone in - these might give me a head start on her!

Yes, they really work - at least I know where the lad is.... roughly. They have a nice mellow sound too, not tinny or harsh.

I have a friend (children's trumpet teacher) with an ex racing greyhound who can be in the next county in a few bounds He walks with a hunting horn and recalls the dog with that. The whole park can hear him, it's hilarious. I do worry that he could recall an entire pack of hunting hounds one day though.
