poppy ben grace
Hi all, need to pick your brains . We are hoping to get some quail and are thinking of using a corner in our wir to put them in. The area we would use is about 6 foot by 6 foot and 6 foot high. We used chicken wire to build the run and have had no probs with foxes and it is very solid . Is this safe for quail? What do you think about housing was thinking of a go(no run obviously!) .Was thinking of getting 4 quail ,no idea where to buy from we are in cambs/lincs. Any tips would be so helpful want to get this right! Thankyou guys! PS so excited this will be my 40th bday present from oh( he will be making the new run)

PS so excited this will be my 40th bday present from oh( he will be making the new run) this is where we keep our quail https://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=198489&id=568396756&l=82c7ddbfa4 if you're using a high roofed run then best to put some bubble wrap on the underside of the roof or similar as quail can fly straight up when startled and may break their necks. we put extra mesh over the wire of the rabbit run/house because the gaps in the existing mesh were too large and a quail could have stuck its head thru and maybe got it bitten off by a passing fox/cat/stoat whatever... for a house we just cut the handles off a tub trug, cut a door in it and turned it upside down (see photos) they've been perfectly fine in that. we started off with 5 males which we got off freecycle last october. They were getting along fine until the spring when they started to fight so we had to seperate 1 male who was wounded and put him in the upstairs bit. We then got 7 females from a breeder and put them in with him, all was fine. Then we moved 5 of the larger females into the downstairs run with the other 4 males and the females were molested so badly we've had to put them back with the male upstairs. We're going to cull the 4 males in the run and eat them and then put the 7 females and 1 male from upstairs back into the run. Quail can be very violent/nasty so be prepared! If you're only having 4 then best have 4 females or 3 females and 1 male. We bought Katie Thear's book about quail so I suggest you get a copy as it's very good http://www.amazon.co.uk/Keeping-Quail-Domestic-Commercial-Management/dp/0906137381
