Janepie33
OH agreed to take on an extra chicken back in October as it was the only one some friends had left after a fox attack. She is a dear little chicken, very friendly, but sadly bullied by our other 5. As a result of the bullying she keeps escaping into our side of the garden for a bit of respite from the bullying. For that reason I didn't want to clip her wings. She made a small amount of mess where she shouldn't have, but nothing major. OH kept threatening to clip her wings. He now works from home and the girls free range when he is in his 'office' at the bottom of the garden. I have manage d the bullying by letting 3 hens out at a time and this seems to work. But FAR too complicated for OH to administer!! Today I had a close look at the bullied chicken and found to my horror that OH (assisted I suspect by DS) has absolutely butchered her wing feathers, cutting off random bits all over BOTH wings. He only had to go onto the forum to find out how to do it properly!!! I am fuming. And not just because he went behind my back!! I can't even discuss it with him as he and DS are out enjoying a round of golf that I bought for them. I was planning a big roast dinner for them on their return but really don't feel like making the effort now! Rant over. Thanks for listening fellow chicken people. Patricia W
Could it be the result of bullying? Or DS?
Old Speckled Hen
He said he didn't do it! a self-wing-clipping chicken.....you need to breed from her and patent the new breed Tell hubby clipping both wings will make her fly just as well as she did before (you clip one wing to cause unbalance) Strange...when I met him he didn't look like the chicken mutilating kind
percy049
I know how it feels.... my dad put a box with nest stuff in the garden, in a dark area, to try and get one hen to stop laying in the garage before winter, despite that being months away. He didnt even decide to tell me, until I found another hen laying in there. When she left, there were 2 eggs (that day and the day before). I too was fuming. I thought he got rid of the box, but he put it down the side passage, only for me to find 3 eggs in there! We wondered where all our eggs had gone . I have since taught him a clever way of trying to stop a hen laying in the garage. My rant over too
