52fish
Our chickens have finally discovered their dust bath of sand and throuoghly enjoying it, but have also taken to pecking at the sand. I suspect they're actually eating it because the sand is definitely going down (allowing for that kicked out). Is this a problem, or should I just leave them to it? Thanks in advance! jippy1
Ours are doing the same, not really bathing in it ,,,,eating it and just sitting in it, Not sure if this is normal only had chickens for 1 week .
JanTheDiver
I have had mine coming up 2 years, they all do it! It has ever caused them a problem, it's probably just like tiny grit. Mine have eaten enough to fill a bath so I wouldn't worry about it; I would advise using play sand though as builders sand, I believe, has chemicals in it. Hope this helps. Plum
Remember there's quite a lot gets caught up in their feathers and will be transported around the run.
SteveC
We put some play sand in a deep sided seed tray to use as a dustbath. All our girls just stand around the edge and peck at it as though it's a feeder! They've got through most of what we put out in only 24 hours. Haven't so much as seen them stand in the thing let alone bathe in it!
