Gawd, you need about 7 hands to deal with a chick! Jools Posted May 4, 2011 Share Posted May 4, 2011 I had one a couple of years ago that had just started pipping when mum took the three hatched chicks and left the nest. I brought it inside, put it on a damp tea towel in a small tupperware dish next to the aga with a lamp right overhead. It might be worth trying - mine grew into a very strapping lad. The theory being that if they are not strong enough to break out of their shell, they won't grow up into healthy chickens (needed to ensure survival of the breed). Their first (all important) test in life is to make it out of their shell alive. Weak chicks or ones with deformities will not make it. Don't be too sad, it's just how things are when you're a chicken. 1 is still making the odd tapping sound Verea has taken her brood to the food, so I think it might be over As Jools noted, you may have to help at this point if you want that chick to hatch. Given the length of time, Mum's priority now is the survival of the two chicks that have hatched. They need to feed and drink, her attention will now focus on teaching them how this is done and keeping them warm. She can't sit on the remaining egg and look after chicks, in such situations, instinct tells her to look after the chicks and abandon the egg. Vera has totally abandoned the nest now in favour of the run area, so that's it. I would have tried to help the tapping chick if it had cheeped or pipped, but it hadn't got that far so I doubt it would make it anyway The eggs are all cold, so I've taken them from the nest. I'm pretty sure they are DIS, and apparently that is a massive problem with the breed. Anyway, out of five fertile serama eggs I have two chicks, and considering they were posted eggs and how difficult hatching live serama is, I'm actually pretty pleased The first chick is eating and drinking and causing mayhem, but as the other chick is merely 15 hours old it's a bit more subdued Hopefully tomorrow it will be a bit brighter and stronger and they will both thrive Now, what's the betting they're both boys Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

My first attempt with posted eggs (a couple of years ago now) resulted in 0/6. That was very disappointing for us and I'm sure an even bigger blow for the broody hen . The first chick is eating and drinking and causing mayhem, but as the other chick is merely 15 hours old it's a bit more subdued Hopefully tomorrow it will be a bit brighter and stronger and they will both thrive . I'm sure s/he'll be fine, they do need 24hrs to settle and get their energy back after breaking out of their shell. Now, sit back (with Camera at the ready ) and enjoy the next few days.
