Seed Numbers....

Recommended Posts

I belong to the Heritage Seed Library and have my 6 packs of seed from them each year and also buy some seeds from Ryton Gardens when we go on Potato Day - apart from that I'm not loyal to any one seed company and buy whatever takes my eye, the number of seeds and the cost. This year I have quite a few packets of Thompson & Morgan seeds and have been surprised by the contents........3 packets of 30 sweetcorn seeds.......one contained 20 seeds, one contained 23 and the third contained 21  I've returned the packaging from those to their customer services and am waiting for a reply but since then I've also found shortages in packets of butternut squash and courgettes. I could understand it with small seeds like lettuce and radish but corn kernals and squash seeds are big and easily counted

Something to keep an eye out for - has anyone else had the same problem?

I've noticed this year that the number of seeds in a packet have been reduced and a lot of packets haven't got the amounts on. and I brought most of my seed in the July half price sale last year on the plus side I have got a packet of Turks Turban squash that had 2 foil packs in it so thats me set for a few years

I hope you have more luck with T&M than I have with both Mr Fothergills and J Parkers - neither company seem interested in answering email complaints, it's really put me off ordering from these companies, i've been using them for years but I feel as if they are getting lots of new customers from the renewed interest in gardening and not particularly worried if some people are dissatisfied. :shameonu: .

How annoying  - we need to post on here then so that we can work out the best ones to buy.

...Moreveg is a super, family owned set up where I buy all my seeds. You get a hand written note thanking you for your order, and a super service ... if you don't get a satisfactory answer from the big hitters.

Thanks Egluntyne, their website looks helpful too, I'll definitely be giving their seeds a try. 8)

What a swizz about the seed numbers! It's useful that you posted Lesley, so we can all compare notes.

As an aside, if anyone is tempted by Wilkinson's cheap, own brand seeds, but thinks they'll be rubbish, be assured that they are OK.

I mistakenly stuck to the "better" brands for ages, but last year had far better results on some impulse buy salads & herbs from Wilko's, compared alongside the others!

Off to try Moreveg. :D

Well..........I had a letter today and two packets of sweetcorn seeds so that's a result :D - but I was disappointed with the accompanying letter .....it was a standard letter addressed to "Dear customer" ......not impressed :( .

I bought seeds from Edwin Tucker last year as I ordered my seed potatoes from them - they were really good and their Customer Service was really helpful when I phoned them for advice before ordering.

To be fair.. I have found that the best seeds I have are the 35p packets from Aldi. My grandad has bought them for me in the past, and I have always had superb results compared against other 'better' brands.

Martin :)

My Aldi seeds always do well. For example; I had a complete failure from a whole packet of Fothergill's nasturtuims whereas the Aldi ones were all up in 5 days :D

Last autumn I bought four bare rooted cox apple trees, about 4 feet tall, for £4.99 each. This spring they are smothered in blossom.

Lidl seeds are very good too, we usually use their carrots because we grow enough to last us all year and that is quite a lot of seed. We bought loads of seeds from our local Wyvale last autumn because they were selling them all for 50p a packet so we bought quite a lot of expensive F1 varieties that we normally couldn't afford.

I'm obviously spending far too much on seeds!

I had to buy some basil seeds today and whilst I was perusing the packets Carl called to say that he'd found some but they were T&M.......I managed to inform 2 other people of my feelings whilst politely telling Carl why I didn't want them  I bought Carters as they had twice as many as others, for half the price.
