beach chick
our grass is looking worse and worse, and I need some help! to explain - we have 3 areas of lawn on 2 sides of the house, bisected by wide borders - the ground is bumpy - lumps here, pot holes there. I have tried filling in the holes with a mix of compost and grass seed, with limited success, and doing the "H thing" with the spade to remove some of the lumps. actually, the dips are worse than the lumps... - the main problem is that the grass is very mixed type - so we have big clumps of co"Ooops, word censored!" darker green grass surrounded by what looks like 'normal' short lawn grass, plus bits that look as if they have died away - from the snow maybe... - lots of daisies, which I dont mind, but other weeds which I am not so keen on like dandelions and thistles so, do I weed and feed the whole thing? try again to fill and reseed the bumps? how do I deal with the darker bits? any advice gratefully accepted... Daphne
We definitely have grass rather than lawn so I can't advise on making it look better and more uniform, but with regard to dandelions - bees are meant to use them for early season nectar but I have to say I have never seen any of ours on mine. In case they are using the plants I let them flower a bit but pick off the heads pretty sharpish so they don't go to clocks when the wind blows the seed everywhere. To remove them permanently you could dig the plants out - but they have a long tap root; or use something like glyphosate which is pretty fast acting. I do glyphosate my thistles on a still day at this time of year when they are in growth - they get killed off fast; but I have one giant thistley type thing which is magnificent like a candelabra, its in a corner so I just let it grow
beach chick
thistles in the right place are fab, I agree - but not when they are cunningly lyingly flat on the ground so beneath the blades of the mower!! the dandelion tip is a good idea, I will do that.
