chuckmum6
My Maran bantie Ronnie, has developed a limp and is generally uncomfortable. I have felt her all over and can feel nothing obvious, I have also checked her abdomen and vent, all fine. She is subdued, but is eating, drinking and had a bit of a scratch around. She is definately not herself (her nickname is the murderous Maran, something she isn't at the moment). I tend to think it is a strain, probably caused by Onion our cockerel. I had hoped that she would perk up with a bit of rest, but I think I will be making a trip to the vet if she hasn't improved when I get home from work tomorrow. Any ideas on how I could make her more comfy?
Jools
Arnica is meant to be good if you have any to hand. Metacam too but I don't know the dose and your vet would need to prescribe it.
Chucky Mama
Rest is the best medicine. Keep her closely confined with food and water nearby to stop her from having to more around for food. You may have to make getting into the coop easier for her too by using an extra brick or log as a step up. Arnica is fine too. If there is no steady improvement you may need to pop her along for an exam and perhaps something like metacam to reduce inflammation (don't self dose with metacam though). Surfnirvana
Hello Just to let you know that my chook developed a limp overnight. I'm sure it was when they all fly out of the cube in the morning and one of the bigger chooks landed on top of her. Her left leg felt a lot hotter than her right. She was putting weight on it, and it seemed to be better in the mornings, but worse by the evening, so was having to lift her up to the cube each evening!! I left her for a week, but she wasn't getting any better, so took her to the vets on Monday. He had a good feel around and said that it wasn't broken just badly sprained. He gave me Metacam to syringe down her beak once a day (it is an anti-inflamatory). Well, within 30 minutes of giving it to her back at home, she had improved dramatically. Day 3 and you can barely notice a limp now! See how yours gets on, but you may need a trip to the vet if she doesn't improve. Good luck
Stedic
Hello, Thought I'd add that our Copper Black developed a sudden limp about this time last year. She also had one leg which was noticeably hotter than the other. We popped her to the vet who, having showed us pics of her own girls, diagnosed an infected pin feather. A shot of Baytril and a sleep and she made a miraculous recovery. The vet did say that chickens cope quite badly with infections, so its important to get on top of them quickly - I'd take her to the vet and see what they say. chuckmum6
Well I took her to the vet on Wednesday, he could find nothing wrong with her. She had an injection and is on a course of antibiotics, which goes in her water - which she won't drink! I had her in a dog crate in the garage, but let her back with the rest she is a bit better, she's not limping but does go off to mope under a bush. I did she her scratching about and preening, so positivish. I hope the £25 pays off, bless her!
