koo2cat
Just found this rather good website called http://www.grandpasfeeders.co.uk It sells a sparrow/rat/rain proof feeder for chickens. Rather nifty thing, a bit pricey but will probably cut my girls food bill by 50% due to the pesky sparrows not pinching it anymore! Sorry if this website has been posted before! WitchHazel
I have several of these for our allotment chickens and they are great, well worth the money. Initially I couldn't face paying that much for a feeder (especially as I needed 2), so I bough the cheaper treadle feeders. They were OK, although our Roo couldn't use them, but they weren't great. Fairly soon after buying the cheapie ones, I bought 2 of the Grandpas feeders, and they were (and are_ just fantastic. We used the cheapies for last year's chicks, and this year I've bought Grandpas Feeders for the chicks too and sold the cheapies.
Egluntyne
Good heavens! I paid £40 for my rat proof feeder.
WitchHazel
Good heavens! I paid £40 for my rat proof feeder. Me too, originaly. But my Roo couldn't get his head in sensibly, we couldn't get many chooks eating out of it at once, and so we bought one of the Grandpa's feeders (Actually, DH made me a wooden version first). Then another, for the other pen.
Chucky Mama
I very nearly bought one but the price put me off plus my galvanised treadle was a nightmare (dampness and clogging). I made a wooden version in the end. They do look good thought. I suppose postage makes them more expensive - shame they are not a wee bit cheaper
The Dogmother
Looks like some marking up is going on there!
Stedic
They look great....but for that price they have to save you a LOT of chicken food to pay for themselves! I know they're supposed to be rat proof - but can't the rats just learn what to do as well?
koo2cat
An adult rat weighs 300g where as an average adult chicken weighs alot more and the weight required to lift the flat is 500g. Just thought it might interest some of you. The sparrows are constantly pinching our food and I get sick of having to bring the food in at night to prevent vermin so although expensive might be worth the investment in the long run. WitchHazel
I found with the cheaper treadle feeders that we ended up with soggy food stuck in the bottom, which was quite hard to get to to dislodge. The whole style of the GP's Feeders is different, and so far we haven't had damp food or sticking.
Plum
Your sparrows will be so fat from eating that many pellets they'll be able to open it
