bluekarin
I have put it into a cat basket with a saucer of water and some tinned fish, but not sure what else to do. It seems okay, just obviously in shock. Not sure if it will last the night, but I didn't want it to be killed by the cats. I love my cats, but I hate this part of their nature
Chucky Mama
I am afraid that pretty much it's only chance of survival is to go back outside for the parents to feed on the ground You could try tucking it into a high bush to provide a little more security. Sadly with fledglings Mother Nature is particularly harsh
Ziggy
Hi, I have been told that cat's saliva is poisonous to birds (something about a pasturalla bacteria??), so it seems if a bird has been caught and carried in a cat's mouth, its chance of survival are pretty slim. Our cats have bells on their collars, but regularly loose the bells (not sure how), and we still get regular gifts of mice, and the occasional bird. Like you, I always rescue the victim, and put them in a quite place out of view and reach of the cats, and see if they recover before releasing them, but to date only one bird survived. Not all birds were fledglings, most are older birds. I don't know if the one that survived more than 24 hours before I released it survived after that... Good luck to your little fledgling... Seagazer
I have to say I absolutely love my cats but this is one thing that really, really upsets me. Even when they catch mice and I hate mice. I think I've also only had the odd one that has survived. One was a whopping big pigeon that Dave somehow managed to catch. We kept it in the shed in a puppy crate overnight and set him (YS called him Jimmy) free in the morning. He straight away flew into my kitchen window and knocked himself out. Kept him quiet for a bit and then released him again and he flew off. The last one Dave caught was a robin (oh the shame). I managed to get it away from him and I put it in one of my empty hanging baskets so it was out of the cats reach. Sadly it died. I think the shock gets them most of the time. I hope your little bird recovers.
bluekarin
Both my cats have bells on their collars, which is why I am so surprised Gizzy managed to catch one, the naughty girl. I couldn't see any blood or bites on it, so I don't think she hurt it, just carried it. It could have even fallen into our garden where she found it. I just don't know. The bird we now think was a Coal Tit (YD looked it up on the iphone app) and played it the bird song which apparently it loved. It had all its feathers, and was trying to fly, so I think it was only a few days off actually taking off. I softened some cat food with hot water last night and mashed it up and tried to feed it some on the end of a pencil (without the coloured lead) and it had a bit of a munch. And the good news....... ........this morning, hubby came down early and it had escaped the cat basket and was sat on the floor outside the front door, listening to the birds outside and cheeping! As it seemed so lively, I freed it outside, away from the house and behind the garages that are near to it where there is a lot of undergrowth. It eventually hopped out and hid straight away. I hope it will survive, and really there wasn't much more we could have done. I think the fact it survived the night was a good sign.
