I think that the upshot is that if your hen looks droopy, isn't feeding and/or has poo issues, then get it to the vet pronto.

I never fail to be amazed at the number of posts you see on poultry forums of folk with clearly dying or seriously ill hens delaying taking them to the vet and trying to nurse them at home; it is important to now when it crosses that line and proper care/meds are essential. I can't tell you how cross it makes me to see birds dying needlessly; we have a duty of care towards our animals and it makes sense to source a chicken-savvy vet in your area and to ensure that your animals have appropriate care.

I feel JUST like you, it makes my blood boil..

I simply cannot understand it

I was going t say surely those people would not leave their rabbit, cat, dog . horse, ill and not take to a vet, but sadly those RSPCA programs show that yes.... people do.

My girls are such characters, it breaks my heart to see them unwell.

And not only really cross like you but oh so so sad to think of any suffering...

I'm on your soapbox Clare. Whilst it breaks my heart to hear of a chicken suffering and no action being taken just watching and seeing when a creature is in distress and dying, I still wouldn't critisize people for choosing not to consult a vet. But I would for letting things go on rather than end it for a suffering bird.

Chickens are no different to other pets and shouldn't be given any less respect for their interests.

I think the upshot should be to all owners, if your hen is unwell for more than 24 hours, don't try home remedies, wait for test results or just 'wait and see' - take them to a vet pronto! If you cannot dispatch a hen yourself, then it must get appropriate treatment.

 

Posts such as 'my hen has been ill for 7 days/3 weeks' etc etc make my blood boil too. I just have to hold my tongue, which isn't always easy.

I think possivbly that is where vet on the web might be good?

If people know it is a vet giving advice maybe they will take it?

Do you think they think cos we are ordinary bods we are wrong ? maybe?

but if the vet says "take her to the vet " they might?

makes you wonder why they ask for advice in the first instance?
