kayemerton
Hi there, not sure where best to post this question but I am going to Cotswold chickens for the beginners course on Sunday and as I am driving from Essex was planning to perhaps stay over Sunday night with my other half in a B and B somewhere. Can anyone suggest a nice place in the area? Be nice to escape my 2 year old for a night!
Reikiranf
I don't know any in that area but if you Google B&B's in Banbury & look up a few, you can then check out reviews of them on trip advisor, I always do that and have never been disappointed so far! The Dogmother
There's lovely accommodation at The Falkland Arms in Great Tew, which is just 5 mins drive away. Failing that, try Bloxham or South Newington. There are plenty in Banbury centre, which is just 15 mins away, including a Holiday Inn as you come off the M40. This one is just round the corner from me in Banbury The Elephant & Castle in Bloxham has rooms I think, a quick search throws up this in Chipping Norton. I have heard good reports of Badger Farm
kayemerton
Thanks very much for the advice, The Falkland Arms has 4 poster bedroom reduced to £50 on Sunday night so looks like that may be the one! Thank you!
The Dogmother
Oooo, what luck! That's a lovely place. I walk the dogs in the village and surrounding countryside at least twice a week; the pub is just lovely and so is the village.
Reikiranf
That looks gorgeous Claret, I daresay there'll be a few Omlet bookings now, I hope you're on commission, if not you should be!
The Dogmother
I wish I was! No, it's just quite near us and I walk there a lot. The pub is dog friendly and serves the best ever ham, (free range) egg and chips! The little shop next door (used to be the village post office) serves delicious hot chocolate and toasties.. i believe that the owner's dog has recently had pups
Daphne
And its one of the 5 Best Pubs in the World (well in my world!) We used to live reasonably near and spent many nights drinking too much cider and in our ignorant youth puffing on black cherry flavoured tobacco in a clay pipe. We even hired a minibus one infamous New Years Eve. Very very happy memories
The Dogmother
The neighbourhood has changed slightly Daphne - the Great Tew estate was in ruins in the old days, but has been bought up and is being renovated very sympathetically. The village is all still owned by the estate, but a lot of the cottages are now leased by (very rich) 'weekenders from up London' who populate the pub at weekends. If you go in there during the week though, it's still just old locals... bloke with ferrets in a box etc. It's a Hook Norton pub and they have wonderful beer festivals with morris dancers. Chook n Boo Mum
Humph.......wish I'd spent a bit longer than the 5 seconds it took to book the Travelodge I'll be staying at tomorrow night .......if DH & the children were with me I'd have looked properly, cos it was only me I didn't........that'll teach me won't it Sha x
The Dogmother
never mind, you could pop into the pub for lunch.. or a night cap.
ClaireG
It is a lovely, lovely place I went to primary school in Great Tew Must go back sometime soon and see how it has changed.
The Dogmother
They've really tidied up Claire, got the fields stocked up, the cross country course has been rebuilt, the lake cleared and it all looks very smart. A far cry from the dereliction of past years.
ClaireG
I'm so pleased Clare It's such a lovely village, it deserves to be well looked after.
The Dogmother
I wasn't sure at first, i quite liked the dilapidated air it had, but this looks set to bring some funds into the village. They own the quarry too and that has had a facelift.
kayemerton
Ooh I have missed all this conversation as have been too busy running around sorting stuff out for our trip away! (a night away from our 2 year old needs more planning than a military operation! ) I am very excited about our stay away now, Mark and I dont often get away as he works self employed as a contractor away 5 days out of 7. We have booked room 5 with the 4 poster bed at a bargain £50 and to top it off there is folk music Sunday night in the bar so if anyone wants to say hello you will find us propping up the bar! My problem is that I will not want to return to Essex as I love this part of the world too much! You are very lucky Claret to live around here! Look forward to seeing any fellow "Omleters" on Sunday at the course if anyone else is going xx
The Dogmother
Glad you're enjoying it - they often have live music there, and the atmosphere is wonderful as it's so small. In the winter they have big open fires and it's really snug... mind you, a cottage just up the road by the church set fire to its thatched roof with a spark from their chimney earlier in the year - gutted the place I'm a relative newcomer to the area Kaye; I grew up in Hertfordshire, then lived and worked in London for 12 years before ending up up here... I wouldn't change it for the world now. We were walking the dogs nearby today and said how lucky we are to live somewhere so beautiful. The Dogmother
I hope that they had the open fire going this afternoon when you got to the pub; it has been cold and very wet here today. I've been here 17 years now and my grumpy old neighbour, who is 'old school Banbury' still treats me like a newbie
