chrisnrob
You can definitely tell that Audrey is younger than Greta as she's noticeable smaller. That said, she is actually the more bossy one now and will frequently chase Greta to grab a treat from her beak!! What's most impressive is that the apple tree was planted by the previous owners - now that is definitely planning!! It's funny because it hasn't really fruited until this year and now, although not laden with fruit, there is a handful of small apples developing. The MFO said that it could be because there's no tree close by to fertilise it and, thinking about it, there was another tree close by when we moved in. However, that got knocked over when Chris ran into it whilst trying to take cover at a bonfire night party Are your girls keen to get out of the run? Ours seem to be. In fact, today when I opened the egg port to show a neighbour, Greta came into the Eglu and attempted to jump up through the opening. Roll on next Tuesday when the Omlet fencing arrives. Rob Ooh, sorry. I only just noticed your question... I don't think they were particularly pressing to be let out, just pressing for treats. Which they got a lot of in the first few days what with the novelty for me and visitors wanting to be able to feed them. They got considerably fewer treats this weekend, but by about early afternoon Saturday I had finished their free range area, so I was able to let them out and they certainly enjoyed scratching around. They only have earth and bark (and a few shrubs) and aubiose in the run. No grass. And now I am feeling a little guilty they don't have grass and thinking of ways to grow them some fenced off grass and then let them at it. And then do another. And another. Crop rotation! Added to that Lily nonchalantly hopped up on top of the barrier fence this evening (I feared it was way too low, but was hoping for the best and it was not to be). 15-Love to Lily! Landgirl goes to shop to buy more... Live and learn, live and learn Hase your fencing arrived yet? L
Snowy
Re your crop rotation of grass for them Landgirl - someone on here (sorry can't remember but sure they'll own up soon!) used pieces of turf laid in seed trays, kept watered. When they'd eaten one it was removed and allowed to regrow and the chooks were given a fresh seedtray. Brilliant idea!
