witzend
Given that we inevitably feed s"Ooops, word censored!"s to chickens that aren't necessariliy truly organic, is there anything to say that organic feed IS better than non-organic?? The price diff is usually massive - is it REALLY worth it??
witzend
lol - guessing by the total lack of replies that no-one can prove organic IS better...........maybe I'll save the money!.................
Olly
I think you'll find most people use one or the other so can't comment on the one they don't use. Remember, organic is not just about the quality of the food, but also about the environmental impact of the way it's been grown and about the absence of pesticides and chemical fertilisers. witzend
granted - just impatient I guess it's one of the last things I've to get in - apart from the chooks - and I thought I'd get LOADS of responses from people extolling the virtues of organic..............or NOT!!! I'll wait...........................
Redwing
It depends on why you want to feed organic or otherwise I guess I dont feed organic because I dont believe its the best feed out there If you believe that its better then feed it If you want to call your eggs organic then be aware that you need certified organic land and to comply with certain things so its not worth feeding organic feed just to be able to pass on your eggs as organic if you dont comply with the requirements
witzend
That's what I thought - I'm not going to be marketing the eggs so I'm only really bothered about feeding the chickens what's good for them I dont feed organic because I dont believe its the best feed out there So..............what is?? Chucky Mama
I don't regularly eat organic food myself (apart from carrots) neither do I feed my chickens organic food. They have a bog standard mid range pellet and free range around the garden all day picking up all sorts of bits and bobs that certainly aren't certified organic
Egluntyne
Mine too. They have Golden Yolk Layers pellets, which they love. They won't touch the Dodgson and Horrell or Marriages pellets.
witzend
that's interesting - what's in the other 2 that's not in the 1st I wonder? Anyone come across FANCY FEED or FARM GATE ?
Chucky Mama
I had a sample of Fancy Feed that they ate without complaining. Part of my reason for feeding the food I do is that it is easy to get locally. I did trek some distance to get some Garvo a few weeks ago but I don't know that I noticed a significant enough difference in them to warrant a regular trek to get it. migsy
I've used both and haven't noticed any difference so I won't pay the exta. I don't live in an "organic" world anyway. Pollution is everywhere so I don't really see what difference organic feed will make to my eggs.
Sam
I've always used non-organic feed, so can't really comment but my girls have never complained I don't really want to hijack your thread, but don't think its worthy of it's own... but is the small holder layers pellets considered good feed? witzend
thanks for mentioning these - what's the difference supposed to be??
Tutti Frutti
I think everyone will say something different! My girls ate Dodson & Horrell for months but I've changed recently as we've been having a run of softies from my two older girls. I was told that it was a high-end quality feed for pure breeds so not right for hybrid daily layers - don't know if that's true or not? Anyhoo, my girls loved Golden Lay and laid really well on that but I can't get it locally any more. They weren't at all keen on Allen & Page Smallholder (flicking it around) and they scoffed the one bag of Farmgate and Countrywide (see "plastic" thread) so I think it just wasn't nutritious enough - it was gone really quickly. I did a taste test recently - the sample of Fancy Feeds in one Grub and Garvo in another. Garvo won hands down! And Sophia is laying hard shells again, although it's early days yet and we are still getting softies from Roxy. Then you also have the pellets versus mash debate! But to give my girls a change, I just soak pellets in warm water to make a porridge (no need to grind the pellets, they just disolve). My chooks have had a lot of Smallholder feed and seem to like it. Then again, I treat them like my kids in that if they don't like it they will have to do without!
