kittyl Posted June 10, 2011 Share Posted June 10, 2011 Hi, Bibble is my Pekin bantam, she's been busy hatching 6 chicks so I havent really handled her for a while. Now the chicks are 3 weeks old I was checking her over & her legs & one feet are looking rather poor, probably from all that sitting still. Her leg scales are quite flakey & the "thumb" of one foot is swollen & lumpy. I washed her feet & cleaned the lumpy mess hoping it was something stuck to her, but I think its scabby & may be bumblefoot. I expected her to get a bit out of condition while she brooded but I'm thinking she may need a vet, she & the chicks would be very stressed if I seperated them, so I wont take her if there'sanything else I could do. miller30 Posted June 11, 2011 Share Posted June 11, 2011 It doesnt look like bumblefoot to me a couple of my birds have had it it looks like scaley leg mite i think i know some people treat scaley by painting benzyl benasote not sure if that is how you spell it you buy it at the chemist its for people who have scabies so you might get some funny looks you can paint it on the legs with a paint brush ive done mine before when i thought they had it just not sure if you can do it with the chicks someone else may know leanne Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Christian Posted June 11, 2011 Share Posted June 11, 2011 I would say the 2nd picture is definitely scaly leg mite. Vaseline or special scaly leg lotion is the best thing to use. The treatment will need repeating.... The top picture - is that your finger on the left (the pink mass ) or a swollen toe? kittyl Posted June 11, 2011 Author Share Posted June 11, 2011 Thanks for all the advice, I ended up taking her to the vet as her toe swelled up so much. The scab had formed right the way round & started to tighten. The vet managed to cut it away, we dont really know what it was, just a build up of "stuff". She gave me ivermectin for the scalyleg. I must admit I've used Frontline on another hen in the past & it did rid her of mild scalyleg as well as other lice, but I was happier for the vet to prescribe this time (even if it did cost an arm & a leg!) as I was worried about the chicks. The vet thinks I'll need to do them too when they're big enough, I wonder if I should put some vaseline on their legs now to try & kill off any mites they've picked up, can't do any harm can it? Christian Posted June 12, 2011 Share Posted June 12, 2011 My next door neighbour has 3 Pekin bantams, that she bought with scaly leg mite.....She treats them all once a month with scaly leg mite lotion as a preventative. kittyl Posted June 18, 2011 Author Share Posted June 18, 2011 I'm now thinking that the pekin chicks may be affected by this mite. I spose they've been huddled up to Bibble's legs all this time it's bound to affect them. I've been staring at their combs every day waiting to see which are boys, they seemed as if they were starting to come a couple of weeks ago, now they're either no more developed or a bit dry looking, one even looks smaller than it was. Time for some urgent action I think, but what can I use on a 4 wk old chick? I suppose sudocream would be safe? Has anyone else ever had this happen? sparkysmum Posted June 20, 2011 Share Posted June 20, 2011 I like Johnstons Scaly Lotion as it says " safe, gentle & soothing" You paint it on affected leg every 2 days. Zeno 200 is prescribed for scaly leg but you need to be able to weigh your hen accurately. If you can't do this I would stick with Johnstons or other advice on forum.
