chicks4erin
I know this topic has to be on here somewhere but can't seem to find any hits, I'm curious to any State side people or you folks on the other side of the pond who have gotten the Gingernut Rangers/Red Sex Link/ Red Star as pullets. I'm assuming State side, they would be from Murray McMurray instead of getting day old chicks and what your experience has been. I have a 6 year old and 15 yeard old so would like the hens to be friendly and for me too and from what I have read, they say handling the little chicks is so important to get them used to people. It would be nice as a 1st timer to maybe start with 2 or 3 pullets in a Go with a WIR and then as our number of hens grows add another Go and maybe do the day old chicks next time. Any advice or input would be greatly appreciated. I'm just afraid if the pullets are skidish we woudn't want more chickens...what to do, what to do? Egluntyne
If you buy day old chicks, you will need a brooder to put them under, to raise them in indoors for a few weeks, or a broody hen to put them under, with caution. There is lots of useful info in the hatching and rearing chicks section about this. http://club.omlet.co.uk/forum/viewforum.php?f=61 As a beginner, you would be better off cutting your chicken raising teeth on some POLs and your equivalent of our GIngernut Ranger would be idea for this. I've had umpteen over the years, and they are very friendly.

tinamc
I'm am new to chicken keeping and have only had my gingernuts for 6 days now. I have 4 of them, and the breeder said that they are around 17 weeks old. My 4 year old and 3 year old already love them to bits and the hens are really friendly towards them. The first few days the hens were a little timid of us but they seemed to have settled really quickly.
